How a social worker helps families access SLD support

When a child learns differently, a social worker can be the steady guide who turns a maze of services into a clear, walkable path for the whole family.

How a social worker can help, step by step

• Listen and map the need — start with the family's own words. Understand the child's strengths and struggles (reading, writing, maths), home pressures, finances and school situation before signposting anything.
• Route to the right assessment — SLD is confirmed through structured clinical and educational evaluation, not a single test. Connect the family to a qualified developmental clinician or psychologist for assessment, and explain what to expect so they arrive informed, not anxious.
• Unlock entitlements — guide families toward the legal disability certificate process under India's Rights of Persons with Disabilities framework (SLD is a recognised disability), which can open exam accommodations, scribe provisions, fee concessions and scheme benefits. Help gather documents and meet authorities.
• Liaise with the school — support a meeting between parents and teachers to set up accommodations (extra time, alternative formats, reduced copying load) and an individualised education plan where available.
• Coordinate therapy and counselling — link the child to remedial education and, where indicated, speech-language or occupational support, and arrange family counselling if the child's confidence or the parents' stress is affected.
• Follow up — the handover is not the end. Check whether services started, whether the child is coping, and whether the plan needs revisiting.

Throughout, frame SLD as a difference in how a child learns, never a deficit — children with SLD are often bright and capable and simply need the right access route.

A note on timing

SLD is usually confirmed from around ages 6–8, once formal schooling makes reading, writing and number difficulties measurable against expectations. For a younger child showing early concerns, encourage the family toward a general developmental check and monitoring rather than waiting for a formal label — early support of underlying skills helps regardless.
