Specific Learning Disability

What is Specific Learning Disability?

Specific Learning Disability (SLD) is a persistent, unexpected difficulty with reading, writing or maths in a child whose overall ability predicts far better performance. It reflects how the brain processes certain information, not low intelligence or effort. Classified under ICD-11 6A03/6A04, it is usually identified around ages 6–8 and responds well to targeted teaching.

Some bright, capable children hit an unexpected wall with reading, writing or maths — and that wall has a name.

In short

Specific Learning Disability (SLD) describes a persistent, unexpected difficulty in learning one or more core academic skills — reading (dyslexia), written expression (dysgraphia) or arithmetic (dyscalculia) — in a child whose overall intelligence, schooling and effort would predict far better performance. It is a difference in how the brain processes certain information, not a sign of low ability or poor motivation. In WHO's ICD-11 it sits under 6A03 · Developmental learning disorder. With the right teaching and support, children with SLD thrive.

Understanding it simply

A child with SLD may read slowly or skip words, reverse letters, spell the same word many ways, or find number sense and times-tables genuinely hard — while being curious, articulate and clever in other areas. The gap between effort and result is the clue. SLD is usually identified around ages 6–8, once formal schooling is well underway, because it is the mismatch between expected and actual academic progress that defines it. Earlier, we watch and support rather than label.

What to watch

Reading much slower than peers, frequent letter reversals, inconsistent spelling, avoiding written work, or genuine struggle with number sense and times-tables — in a child who is otherwise bright and articulate.

Try this at home

Read aloud together daily and celebrate effort over speed. Let your child explain ideas verbally or by drawing when writing feels hard — it keeps confidence and curiosity alive while skills build.

Frequently asked

Is Specific Learning Disability the same as low intelligence?

No. SLD occurs in children with typical or above-average intelligence. The defining feature is an unexpected gap between a child's overall ability and their progress in a specific academic skill like reading, writing or maths.

At what age can SLD be identified?

SLD is usually identified around ages 6–8, once formal schooling is well underway, because it is recognised by the mismatch between expected and actual academic progress. Before then, we observe and support rather than label.

Can a child with SLD do well in school?

Yes. With tailored teaching, accommodations and structured support that build on the child's strengths, children with SLD can thrive academically and beyond.
