Supporting a child with Specific Learning Disability and their family

A counsellor supports a child with Specific Learning Disability by protecting self-esteem, helping the family understand SLD as a processing difference rather than low ability, coaching everyday strategies, liaising with school for accommodations, and signposting to clinician-led assessment and remedial education. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Supporting a child with Specific Learning Disability and their family
Counsellor support for a child with SLD — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child learns to read, write or work with numbers along a different path, a counsellor can be the steady hand that keeps the whole family confident and moving forward.

In short

A counsellor supports a child with Specific Learning Disability (SLD) by protecting the child's self-esteem, helping the family understand that SLD is a difference in how the brain processes information — not a lack of intelligence or effort — and coordinating the practical scaffolding around learning. Your role spans emotional support, family guidance, school liaison and signposting to the right educational and developmental services. The most powerful thing you offer is reframing struggle as a solvable challenge, so the child stays motivated and the family stays hopeful.

How a counsellor can help

  • Protect the child's emotional world. Children with SLD often carry anxiety, frustration or shame from repeated classroom struggle. Build a safe space, name the feelings, and help the child separate "I find reading hard" from "I am not clever." Strengths-based work — spotting what the child does brilliantly — rebuilds confidence.
  • Help the family reframe SLD. Many parents fear it reflects poor parenting or low ability. Explain plainly that SLD is a recognised neurodevelopmental difference in specific skills (reading, written expression or mathematics) and that targeted support genuinely changes outcomes. This shift in understanding lowers pressure at home.
  • Coach everyday strategies. Guide parents on reducing homework battles, breaking tasks into small steps, celebrating effort over marks, and keeping reading and learning low-pressure and positive.
  • Liaise with school. Encourage and support reasonable accommodations — extra time, multisensory teaching, reduced copying, assistive technology — and help the family advocate calmly and effectively with teachers.
  • Support siblings and parental wellbeing. Family stress, comparison between siblings and parental burnout are common; addressing these protects the whole system around the child.
  • Signpost, don't diagnose. Route the family to a structured developmental and educational assessment so the child's specific profile is understood and a remedial education plan can be built.

When to route onward

SLD is most reliably identified once formal schooling is well underway — usually around ages 7–8 and beyond — because it is recognised by a persistent gap between the child's learning in a specific skill and what is expected for their age, despite adequate teaching. If a child shows ongoing difficulty with reading, spelling, written work or number sense that does not match their overall ability, route the family to a clinician-led developmental and educational assessment rather than waiting for the child to "catch up".

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app, a questionnaire or a counsellor's impression alone. Counsellors and families can use this structured clinician-led assessment to understand a child's precise learning profile, then build a plan with our special education and remedial learning team. What to watch

Watch for ongoing difficulty with reading, spelling, written work or number sense that does not match the child's overall ability, plus signs of anxiety, avoidance of school tasks or falling self-esteem.

Try this at home

Praise effort and strategy, not just marks — and keep one daily learning moment short, low-pressure and genuinely enjoyable so the child stays motivated.
