What if my child cries during the first session?

Crying in a first therapy session is normal and expected. Pinnacle therapists go at the child's pace, never force participation, and use the visit to build trust. Comfort items and a calm parent nearby help; most children settle within one to three sessions.

If your child cries during the first session — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

A few tears at the door are not a setback — they're your child telling us something, and we're listening from the very first minute.

In short

If your child cries during the first session, that is completely normal and absolutely expected — new room, new face, new sounds. Our therapists are trained to go at your child's pace, never to force participation, and the first visit is as much about building trust as anything else. Crying does not mean the session has failed, and it does not mean therapy won't work for your child.

What actually happens if your child cries

  • We slow down, not push on. A skilled paediatric therapist reads distress and adjusts — softer voice, more space, a favourite toy, or simply sitting near you until your child settles.
  • You stay close. For many young children, you being in the room (or nearby) is the safety they need. We welcome that and will guide you on how to help.
  • We may shorten or shape the session. A first visit is about rapport and gentle observation, not packing in tasks. Sometimes the "win" is your child glancing at the therapist or touching one toy.
  • Familiar comfort items help. A water bottle, a snack, a soft toy, or a comfort object from home are all welcome.
  • Tears settle. Most children who cry at the start warm up within one to three sessions as the room and the therapist become familiar.

How you can help before and during

  • Talk about the visit beforehand in simple, positive words.
  • Come well-rested and fed where possible — hunger and tiredness lower everyone's tolerance.
  • Stay calm yourself; children read our cues, so your steadiness is genuinely therapeutic.
  • Trust the therapist's pacing — pulling back when a child cries is a clinical skill, not a delay.

The Pinnacle way

Across [70+ centres in 4 states](/), with 700+ therapists and 25 million+ therapy sessions behind us, we have welcomed many tearful first visits — and seen them turn into confident hellos. The first session also helps us understand your child gently; a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care, never from a single visit or a moment of upset. Whether the pathway is speech therapy or another support, your child's comfort leads the way.

Guidance on responsive, child-led early intervention echoes the WHO and UNICEF Nurturing Care Framework and the American Academy of Pediatrics' healthychildren.org advice on easing children into new settings — children settle best when they feel safe and parents stay close.

What to watch

Notice whether your child settles within the first few sessions as the room and therapist become familiar — gradual warming up is the healthy pattern. Persistent, intense distress beyond several visits is worth raising with your therapist so the plan can be adjusted.

Try this at home

Pack a comfort object, a snack and a water bottle, and talk about the visit in cheerful, simple words beforehand — a fed, rested, prepared child settles far faster.

Frequently asked

Is it bad if my child cries in the first session?

Not at all. Crying is a normal response to a new room, new face and new routine. Our therapists expect it and adjust their pace — the first visit is mostly about building trust, not completing tasks.

Will the therapist force my child to participate?

Never. Skilled paediatric therapists read distress and slow down, offering more space, softer interaction and familiar toys. Pulling back when a child cries is a clinical skill, not a delay.

Can I stay in the room with my child?

Yes. For many young children, having you close is the safety they need. We welcome your presence and will guide you on how best to help your child settle.

How long until my child settles into sessions?

Most children who cry at first warm up within one to three sessions as the therapist and room become familiar. Bringing comfort items and keeping a calm manner yourself both help.
