What Happens in Your Child's First Therapy Session

The first therapy session at Pinnacle is warm, playful and unhurried. The therapist gets to know your child through play, listens to your story and concerns, and suggests next steps — there is nothing for your child to pass or fail.

What Happens in the First Therapy Session? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

The first session isn't a test your child can pass or fail — it's the start of a friendly partnership built around your child and your hopes for them.

In short

Your first therapy session at Pinnacle is gentle, unhurried and playful. The therapist spends time getting to know your child, listening closely to your story and concerns, and observing how your child plays, communicates and moves. Nothing is rushed — the goal is to build trust and shape a plan together, not to put your child through anything stressful.

What actually happens

Before you start
  • A warm welcome and a few minutes to settle in — children often explore the room while you and the therapist talk.
  • You'll share your child's history, what you've noticed at home, and what you hope therapy will help with. Your observations matter; you know your child best.

During the session

  • The therapist observes through play — how your child engages, responds to their name, communicates, problem-solves or moves, depending on the area of focus.
  • It often looks like ordinary play, because relaxed children show us the most. There's no pressure on your child to perform.
  • You're encouraged to stay close, especially with younger children, so your child feels safe.

Before you leave

  • The therapist shares early impressions in plain language and suggests next steps — which may include a structured assessment to set a clear baseline.
  • You'll get a sense of goals, frequency and a few simple things to try at home.

What to bring

Bring any earlier reports, a comfort toy or snack, and a list of your questions. It's completely fine for your child to be shy, tearful or busy — therapists expect this, and a single session is just the beginning of getting to know your child.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from a single play session alone. Across [70+ centres](/) and 700+ therapists, every first session is designed to feel safe and unhurried, whether your child is starting speech therapy or another pathway. The session shapes a plan around your child's strengths, not a list of what's missing.

Trusted sources

Our family-centred approach reflects WHO and Nurturing Care Framework guidance on responsive, child-centred early support, and American Academy of Pediatrics (HealthyChildren.org) advice on what families can expect from developmental services.

Next step — book your child's first session or a developmental check with our team on WhatsApp at +91 91001 81181, and we'll guide you gently through everything.

What to watch

Notice how your child settles over the first few sessions rather than judging the very first one — early shyness or tears are normal. Share any new concerns with your therapist between visits.

Try this at home

Write down your top three questions and any things you've noticed at home before you arrive — it helps the therapist focus on what matters most to you.

Frequently asked

Will my child be tested in the first session?

No. The first session is about building trust and getting to know your child through play and conversation. Any structured assessment, such as the AbilityScore®, is arranged separately at a Pinnacle centre under a qualified clinician.

Can I stay in the room with my child?

Yes, especially for younger children. Your presence helps your child feel safe, and your observations give the therapist valuable insight.

What should I bring to the first session?

Bring any earlier reports or records, a comfort toy or snack, and a short list of your questions and concerns.

What if my child cries or won't cooperate?

That's completely normal and expected. Therapists are skilled at gently engaging shy or upset children, and one session is simply the start of getting to know your child.
