Down Syndrome

How a counsellor supports the emotional wellbeing of a child with Down syndrome

A counsellor helps a child with Down syndrome cope emotionally by building trust and using developmentally tuned, strengths-based tools — play, art, social stories and emotion-coaching — to name feelings, navigate friendships and self-esteem, and build coping skills, while working alongside family, school and the therapy team. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Helping a child with Down syndrome cope emotionally — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child with Down syndrome feels different, frustrated or left out, a skilled counsellor helps them name those feelings — and rediscover their confidence, friendships and joy.

In short

A counsellor supports a child with Down syndrome by building a trusting relationship and using developmentally tuned, strengths-based approaches — play, art, social stories and emotion-coaching — to help the child understand and express feelings, navigate friendships and self-esteem, and build coping skills for frustration or being treated differently. Crucially, counselling works with the family, school and the wider therapy team, so the child feels understood across every setting. The emphasis is always on what the child can do and who they are, not on what is hard.

How a counsellor can help

  • Build safety and rapport first — children open up when they feel accepted. Use unhurried sessions, the child's preferred ways of communicating, and concrete, visual tools rather than abstract talk.
  • Name and normalise emotions — emotion cards, faces charts, play and art let a child show feelings they cannot yet put into words, and learn that all feelings are okay.
  • Strengths-based, never deficit — anchor every session in the child's interests, humour and abilities; counter the "what's wrong with me" narrative with a clear sense of identity and belonging.
  • Social and friendship coaching — social stories, role-play and small-group work help with reading cues, handling teasing or exclusion, and forming friendships.
  • Concrete coping strategies — simple, repeatable calming routines, choice-boards and predictable structure reduce frustration and build self-regulation.
  • Work systemically — coach parents and teachers so the child's emotional needs are met consistently, and coordinate with speech, occupational and behavioural therapists.
  • Adapt to the child's developmental level — pace, language and tools should match where the child is, not their chronological age alone.

A note on scope and referral

Counselling addresses the emotional and social impact — self-esteem, frustration, friendships, identity. Watch for signs that need wider review: marked withdrawal, sleep or appetite changes, regression, or persistent low mood, which warrant coordination with the paediatric team. Down syndrome is recognised at or near birth, so the counsellor steps into an established care pathway — your role is to strengthen the child's emotional resilience within it, not to assess the condition itself.

Frequently asked

What counselling approaches work best for a child with Down syndrome?

Developmentally tuned, strengths-based approaches work best — play therapy, art, social stories, emotion-coaching and small-group social skills work, using visual and concrete tools matched to the child's developmental level rather than abstract talk.

Should counselling involve the family and school?

Yes. Emotional support is most effective when it is systemic — coaching parents and teachers so the child's needs are met consistently across settings, and coordinating with speech, occupational and behavioural therapists.

When should a counsellor escalate to the wider medical team?

Escalate when you see marked withdrawal, persistent low mood, sleep or appetite changes, or developmental regression. These warrant coordination with the paediatric and clinical team beyond emotional counselling.
