At What Age Should a Child Reach Gross Motor Milestones?

Most toddlers sit by ~9 months, pull to stand and cruise by 12 months, walk independently between 12–18 months, and run, climb and kick by 2–3 years. There is a wide healthy range, so steady forward progress matters more than the exact week.

Gross Motor Milestones, Age by Age — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every wobble, every roll, every first wobbly step is your child writing their own movement story — and most children write it on their own timetable.

In short

Gross motor skills — the big movements of head, trunk, arms and legs — unfold in a predictable order across the toddler years. Most children sit without support by around 9 months, pull to stand and cruise by 12 months, walk independently between 12 and 18 months, and run, climb and kick a ball by 2 to 3 years. There is a wide, healthy range, so it is the steady direction of progress that matters most, not the exact week.

The milestones to expect (12–36 months)

  • Around 12 months — pulls to stand, cruises along furniture, may stand alone briefly
  • 12–18 months — walks independently, stoops to pick up a toy and stands again
  • 18–24 months — walks well, begins to run, walks up steps with help, pulls toys while walking
  • 2–3 years — runs steadily, kicks a ball, climbs onto furniture, jumps with both feet, walks up and down stairs

The science

Gross motor growth follows a head-to-toe (cephalocaudal) pattern as the nervous system matures and muscles strengthen through practice. Floor time, safe space to explore and plenty of active play are the fuel. Gentle physiotherapy can help when movement is delayed.

What to watch

Seek a check if your child is not pulling to stand by 12 months, not walking by 18 months, walks only on tiptoe persistently, or loses a movement skill they previously had.

Try this at home

Give plenty of safe floor and outdoor time daily — let your toddler crawl, cruise, climb low steps and chase a rolling ball. Active free play builds strength far better than time in walkers or seats.

Frequently asked

At what age should my child walk independently?

Most children walk on their own between 12 and 18 months. Walking a little earlier or later than average is usually normal, but a check is wise if your child is not walking at all by 18 months.

Is it normal for a toddler to walk on tiptoes?

Occasional tiptoe walking is common as toddlers learn balance. If your child walks on tiptoes most of the time beyond age 2, or seems stiff in the legs, mention it at a developmental check.

My toddler skipped crawling — should I worry?

Some children bottom-shuffle or move straight to standing and walking without much crawling. On its own this is usually fine, as long as overall movement keeps progressing.
