When Do Children Usually Reach Gross Motor Milestones?

Most children sit by 6–9 months, walk around 12–15 months, and run, climb and jump between 18 and 36 months. Ranges are wide and healthy, but check in if a child is not sitting by 9 months, not walking by 18 months, or loses a skill.

When Do Toddlers Reach Gross Motor Milestones? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every wobble, crawl and first step is your toddler writing their own movement story — and most write it right on time.

In short

Gross motor skills are the big-body movements — sitting, crawling, standing, walking, running — powered by the large muscles. Most children sit without support by around 6–9 months, pull to stand and cruise by 9–12 months, walk independently around 12–15 months, and begin running and climbing stairs between 18 and 24 months. There is a wide, healthy range, so a few weeks either side is usually nothing to worry about.

How gross motor unfolds in the toddler years

  • 12–15 months — walks alone, stoops to pick up a toy, may climb onto furniture
  • 15–18 months — walks well, pulls toys while walking, begins to run stiffly
  • 18–24 months — runs more smoothly, kicks a ball, walks up steps with help
  • 24–36 months — jumps with both feet, climbs confidently, pedals a tricycle, balances briefly on one foot

These skills build head-to-toe and centre-outward — strong trunk control comes before steady legs. Movement also fuels speech, attention and confidence, so encouraging it helps your whole child grow.

When to check in

Reach out for a developmental check if your child is not sitting by 9 months, not walking by 18 months, loses a skill they once had, or moves much more stiffly or floppily than other children their age. Persistent parental concern is itself a good reason to ask.

What to watch

Ask for a check if your child is not sitting by 9 months, not walking by 18 months, loses a skill they once had, or moves much more stiffly or floppily than peers.

Try this at home

Give floor time and safe space to cruise, climb and chase a rolling ball — toddlers build strong legs by moving, not by sitting in walkers or carriers.

Frequently asked

At what age do most children walk independently?

Most children take their first independent steps between 12 and 15 months, though anywhere up to around 18 months can still be within the healthy range. If your child is not walking at all by 18 months, it is worth a developmental check.

Is it normal for my toddler to walk later than other children?

Yes — gross motor development has a wide, normal range, and many healthy children walk a little later than their peers. Persistent concern, loss of a skill, or no walking by 18 months are reasons to ask a clinician.

What gross motor skills should a 2-year-old have?

By around 24 months most toddlers can run, kick a ball, walk up steps with help, and climb onto furniture. Jumping with both feet and pedalling a tricycle usually emerge closer to age 3.
