Dysgraphia (Written Expression Impairment)

Worrying about dysgraphia at 18–24 months

Dysgraphia cannot be identified at 18–24 months — written expression depends on handwriting skills children only build from around age 5–7. A toddler isn't expected to write, so there are no genuine dysgraphia signs now. Instead, nurture fine-motor play, scribbling and communication, and raise any general developmental concerns early. Formal dysgraphia assessment becomes meaningful only from about age 6.

If you're watching your busy toddler and wondering whether trouble with writing could be on the horizon, your attentiveness is a gift — and here's the reassuring truth.

In short

At 18–24 months, it is far too early to identify dysgraphia — written expression impairment. Dysgraphia is a difficulty with the handwriting and written-language skills that children only begin to build around ages 5–7, once formal writing is taught. A toddler isn't expected to write at all, so there are simply no genuine "dysgraphia signs" to look for now. What you can do is nurture the early foundations — and there is nothing here to worry about.

What actually matters at this age

Dysgraphia is recognised only once a child has had real teaching and practice in handwriting — usually around school entry, from age 6 onwards. Long before any letter is formed, children lay down the building blocks that later support writing. At 18–24 months, gently watch and encourage these instead:
  • Hand and finger use — picking up small objects (raisins, blocks) with thumb and finger, stacking 2–4 blocks, banging two objects together.
  • Scribbling — holding a crayon in a whole-hand grasp and making marks on paper; this is exactly right for now.
  • Imitation — copying you stirring, waving, or pointing to things they want.
  • Understanding and words — following simple instructions, using a growing handful of words.

If, instead, you notice your toddler isn't using their hands together, isn't picking up small items, isn't pointing or imitating, or has lost skills they once had — that is worth a general developmental check. Not for dysgraphia, but because hand skills and communication are the foundations everything else builds on.

When dysgraphia assessment becomes meaningful

A fair assessment for written expression needs a child who has been taught to write and has had time to practise — typically age 6 and above. Before then, the kindest and most useful approach is to support fine-motor play, drawing and language now, and to raise any general developmental concerns with a clinician early.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online list or a single observation, and never at an age where a condition cannot yet be meaningfully identified. For a toddler, our focus is your child's whole developmental picture: hands, play, communication and joy. If fine-motor or hand-skill development is your worry, our occupational therapy team can guide playful, age-right activities that build strong foundations.

Next step — Relax about writing for now and enjoy the scribbles. If you'd like reassurance about your toddler's hand skills or overall development, book a developmental check with a Pinnacle clinician.

What to watch

Don't watch for dysgraphia signs at this age — there are none. Instead, gently watch that your toddler uses thumb-and-finger grasp, scribbles, stacks a few blocks, points and imitates. Any loss of skills, or not using hands together, warrants a general developmental check — not a dysgraphia worry.

Try this at home

Offer big crayons and a sheet of paper and let your toddler scribble freely. Whole-hand grasps and bold marks are exactly right for now — these are the playful foundations that writing will one day be built on.

Frequently asked

Can dysgraphia be diagnosed in a toddler?

No. Dysgraphia is a difficulty with handwriting and written expression — skills children only begin to learn from around age 5–7. A toddler isn't expected to write, so there is nothing to assess for dysgraphia at 18–24 months.

When does dysgraphia assessment become meaningful?

Usually from around age 6 and above, once a child has been formally taught handwriting and has had time to practise. Before then, the focus is on building fine-motor and language foundations through play.

What should I support instead at 18–24 months?

Encourage fine-motor play — picking up small objects with thumb and finger, stacking blocks, scribbling with crayons — plus pointing, imitating and growing words. These are the foundations that later support writing.

When should I see a clinician about my toddler?

If your toddler isn't using their hands together, isn't picking up small items, isn't pointing or imitating, or has lost skills they once had, a general developmental check is wise — not for dysgraphia, but for overall development.
