Non-Verbal / Minimally Verbal Presentation

Worrying about few words at 12–18 months?

At 12 to 18 months a wide range of talking is normal, and a non-verbal or minimally verbal presentation is not a diagnosis at this age. What matters most is connection — pointing, gestures, responding to name and shared looks — not word count. Worth a check if there are no gestures by 12 months, no response to name, little babble, no shared attention, or any loss of skills.

Few Words at 12–18 Months: When to Worry — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

If your little one isn't saying many words yet at 12 to 18 months, it's natural to wonder — and your watchfulness is exactly the right instinct.

In short

At 12 to 18 months, a wide range of talking is completely normal — some children have a handful of words, others none yet, and many are quietly understanding far more than they can say. A non-verbal or minimally verbal presentation is not a diagnosis at this age; it simply describes how a child is communicating right now. What matters far more than word count is whether your child is connecting — pointing, gesturing, responding to their name, sharing looks and sounds with you. If those connection signs are present, gentle monitoring is usually enough.

What's typical — and what's worth a closer look

By around 12 months many children say one or two words and babble with rich, speech-like tune. By 18 months, words often start to add up — but the spread between children is genuinely wide. Words can come later; communication should still be growing.

It's reasonable to ask for a developmental check rather than wait if you notice:

  • No gestures by around 12 months — no pointing, waving, or reaching up to be picked up.
  • Not responding to their name or to familiar voices consistently.
  • Little babbling or no speech-like sounds.
  • No shared attention — not looking where you point, or not bringing things to show you.
  • Loss of any skill — words, sounds or gestures that were there and then fade. This always warrants prompt review.

A child who points, gestures, makes eye contact and clearly understands you — but has few spoken words — is often simply taking the scenic route to talking. The reassuring truth is that early support, when needed, works beautifully at this age.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online description or a single observation. Our clinicians map how your child communicates today — gestures, sounds, understanding and connection — and build a plan around their strengths. If talking is the worry, our speech therapy team can begin warm, play-based support that grows communication long before pressure ever enters the picture.

What to watch

Watch connection more than word count: by 12 months expect pointing, waving and response to name; by 18 months expect growing gestures, babble and shared attention. Seek a check sooner if gestures are absent, name-response is missing, or any word, sound or gesture is lost.

Try this at home

Name what your child looks at, all day — "ball!", "dog!", "up!" — then pause and wait. These short, repeated, real-moment words, paired with eye contact, build communication faster than screens or flashcards ever can.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for my 18-month-old to have no words yet?

Some children at 18 months have several words, others very few or none — the range is genuinely wide. What matters more is whether communication is growing in other ways: pointing, gestures, responding to their name and understanding you. If those connection signs are present, gentle monitoring is reasonable; if they're missing, a developmental check brings useful clarity.

What's the difference between late talking and a non-verbal presentation?

"Non-verbal or minimally verbal" simply describes how a child is communicating right now — it is not a diagnosis, especially at 12 to 18 months. Many children who talk later catch up beautifully. A clinician looks at the whole picture — understanding, gestures, play and connection — rather than word count alone.

My child babbles but says no real words — should I worry?

Rich, speech-like babble is itself a healthy sign of developing communication. Words often follow babble. Keep naming things in everyday moments and pause to let your child respond. If babble is also sparse, or your child doesn't respond to their name, a developmental check is worthwhile.

Can speech therapy help a child this young?

Yes — early support at this age is warm, play-based and very effective. It works by enriching everyday communication — gestures, sounds, shared attention and first words — long before any pressure to perform. A clinician will tailor it to your child's strengths.
