Dyslexia (Reading Impairment)

Early signs of dyslexia in a 6-to-9-month-old

There are no signs of dyslexia in a 6-to-9-month-old, because reading is years away. Dyslexia is recognised only once a child is learning to read, usually from about age 6 to 8. At this age, simply nurture babbling, listening and shared book-time, and check hearing if you ever have a concern. Only a clinician can assess later.

Watching your baby grow, it's natural to wonder about every milestone — but reading is a journey that begins much later, and there is no need to look for dyslexia in a baby this young.

In short

Dyslexia is a specific difficulty with reading and spelling that can only be recognised once a child is actually learning to read — usually around age 6 to 8. At 6 to 9 months there are no signs of dyslexia to look for, because reading is years away. What matters now is your baby's early communication and listening — the foundations that reading will later be built on. So instead of worrying about dyslexia, simply enjoy and gently nurture those early skills.

What is wonderful to nurture at 6–9 months

At this age, the most useful things to observe are the building blocks of language and connection — not reading:
  • Babbling — repeated sounds like ba-ba, da-da, ma-ma
  • Turning to your voice and to everyday sounds
  • Eye contact, smiles and shared joy during play and feeds
  • Responding to her name beginning to emerge
  • Enjoying being read and sung to — looking at pictures, patting the page

These are healthy signs that the listening and language pathways are developing. Talking, singing, naming things and sharing picture books every day all lay strong foundations for reading much later on.

When dyslexia becomes meaningful

Dyslexia is identified during the school years, when a child has had proper teaching and still struggles unexpectedly with letters, sounds, decoding words or spelling — typically from about age 6 to 8 onwards. Earlier hints (around 4–5) can include difficulty learning rhymes, letter names or the sounds letters make, often with a family history of reading difficulty. If your baby is meeting her early communication milestones, there is no cause for concern about reading now.

The one thing worth checking at any age is hearing — clear hearing underpins both speech and later reading. If you ever feel your baby isn't responding to sounds or your voice, ask for a hearing and developmental check.

The Pinnacle way

At [Pinnacle Blooms Network](/), we encourage parents of babies to focus on joyful, everyday communication rather than labels that belong to a later age. If you'd ever like reassurance, a gentle developmental screen looks at the whole picture of how your child is growing. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — never from an online checklist. Should reading or language support be needed in the school years, our speech therapy and learning teams are ready. Learn more about dyslexia and how it is recognised.

What to watch

Dyslexia is not something to look for in a baby. Do watch early communication — babbling, turning to your voice, eye contact and responding to her name. If your baby doesn't respond to sounds or your voice, ask for a hearing and developmental check.

Try this at home

Read, sing and chat with your baby every day — name what she sees, pause for her babbles, and share simple picture books. These joyful moments build the listening and language foundations that reading will rest on years later.

Frequently asked

Can dyslexia be diagnosed in a baby?

No. Dyslexia is a specific difficulty with reading and spelling, so it can only be recognised once a child is actually learning to read — usually from about age 6 to 8. There are no dyslexia signs to look for in a 6-to-9-month-old.

What should I focus on at 6–9 months instead?

Focus on early communication: babbling, turning to your voice and sounds, eye contact, shared smiles, beginning to respond to her name, and enjoying being read and sung to. These build the foundations for later reading.

When does dyslexia usually become noticeable?

Usually during the school years, around age 6 to 8, when a child has had proper teaching but still struggles unexpectedly with letters, sounds, decoding and spelling. Earlier hints from about 4–5 can include trouble with rhymes and letter sounds.

Is there anything I should check now?

Hearing is worth checking at any age, as it underpins speech and later reading. If your baby doesn't respond to sounds or your voice, ask for a hearing and developmental check.
