Every coo and cry from your newborn is a first conversation — so it's natural to wonder what those early sounds tell you about speech to come.

In short

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) cannot be identified in a newborn — it is a difficulty with planning the precise movements of speech, and that can only show once a child is actually trying to make words, usually well after the first birthday. In the newborn months there is no signs list to watch for. What matters now is enjoying early communication — eye contact, cries, coos and feeding — and simply noting how your baby grows. Only a qualified clinician can ever confirm CAS, and never in a newborn.

Why CAS isn't visible in a newborn

CAS is a motor-planning difficulty: the brain knows the word but struggles to sequence the mouth, tongue and jaw movements to say it. A newborn isn't yet making speech sounds, so there is nothing here to diagnose. Genuine early clues to CAS — limited babbling, a late and effortful first word, saying the same word differently each time, or visible mouth 'groping' for sounds — only become meaningful from roughly 12–18 months onward, and a careful assessment usually happens between 2 and 4 years.

What IS worth observing in the newborn months

Rather than scanning for speech problems, simply delight in and gently track these healthy early signs of communication:

• Crying with purpose — different cries for hunger, tiredness or discomfort
• Calming to your voice and turning towards familiar sounds
• Eye contact and gazing at your face during feeds and cuddles
• Comfortable feeding — coordinated sucking and swallowing
• Early cooing (soft vowel sounds) emerging around 2–3 months

If your baby seems not to react to sound at all, or feeding is consistently difficult, mention it to your paediatrician — these point to hearing or feeding checks, not to CAS.

When a speech assessment becomes meaningful

There's no rush in the newborn period. A speech-focused developmental review is worthwhile if, later on, babbling is very limited by around 12 months, first words are delayed or very hard to produce, or your child clearly understands far more than they can say. Persistent parental worry, at any age, is always reason enough to ask for a routine developmental check.
