Down Syndrome

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition present from birth, caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21). Children commonly have some learning delay and shared physical features, but every child is unique — and with early support, speech therapy and inclusive education, they grow and thrive. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre.

What is Down Syndrome? A Clear, Kind Guide for Parents — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

The moment a parent first hears the words "Down syndrome", what they really want is a clear, kind explanation — here it is.

In short

Down syndrome is a naturally occurring genetic condition, present from conception, in which a child is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21 (also called trisomy 21). It is one of the most common genetic conditions worldwide and is recognised at or near birth. Children with Down syndrome share some common physical features and usually have some degree of learning delay, but every child is wonderfully different — and with early support, they grow, learn, play and thrive.

The science, briefly

Most of us are born with 23 pairs of chromosomes. In Down syndrome there is an additional full or partial copy of chromosome 21, which gently changes how the body and brain develop. This is not caused by anything a parent did or didn't do. Children may have characteristic features, may need extra checks for the heart, hearing, vision and thyroid, and typically reach milestones a little later — which is exactly why early developmental support, speech therapy and inclusive education make such a powerful difference.

What to watch

Down syndrome is recognised at or near birth, so the focus is on routine health checks — heart, hearing, vision and thyroid — and on supporting development. Watch for and celebrate each milestone in your child's own time, and share any concerns about feeding, hearing or movement with your paediatrician.

Try this at home

Talk, sing and read to your child every day, naming everyday objects slowly and clearly. This rich language environment gently builds communication and connection from the very start.

Frequently asked

Is Down syndrome caused by something the parents did?

No. Down syndrome occurs naturally at conception when an extra copy of chromosome 21 is present. It is not caused by anything a parent did, ate or avoided during pregnancy.

Can children with Down syndrome learn and go to school?

Yes. With early developmental support, speech therapy and inclusive education, children with Down syndrome learn, communicate and grow. Each child progresses at their own pace, and the right support makes a real difference.

When can my child be assessed?

Because Down syndrome is recognised at or near birth, developmental support can begin early. A clinical AbilityScore® and any assessment are carried out only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre by qualified clinicians.
