Down Syndrome
What Causes Down Syndrome in Young Children?
Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21), present from conception. It is a natural genetic variation — not caused by anything a parent did during pregnancy. Early support helps every child grow towards independence.
Almost every parent of a child with Down syndrome asks the same gentle, important question — "why?" The answer lies in a tiny extra piece of genetic material, and crucially, in nothing you did.
In short
Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 — which is why it is also called trisomy 21. Instead of the usual two copies, the child has three, and this small difference shapes how the body and brain develop. It is present from conception, not caused by anything a parent did, ate, or avoided during pregnancy. It is no one's fault — it is simply a natural variation in how cells divide. The science, gently
When a baby is conceived, they normally inherit 46 chromosomes — 23 from each parent. In Down syndrome, a change during cell division leaves an extra chromosome 21. There are three forms: trisomy 21 (the most common, around 95% of cases, where every cell has the extra chromosome), translocation (the extra material attaches to another chromosome), and mosaic (only some cells carry the extra copy). The chance rises gently with the mother's age, but babies with Down syndrome are born to mothers of every age. It is not caused by stress, diet, medicines or anything in daily life. What matters most is what comes next: early, consistent support helps every child grow towards independence, learning and connection.

What to watch
In a child with Down syndrome, gently watch developmental milestones — feeding, muscle tone, hearing and early communication — alongside routine paediatric health checks, so support starts early.
Try this at home
You did nothing to cause this. Focus your energy on responsive, everyday play and talk — narrating routines, naming objects, celebrating small steps. Consistent early interaction supports your child's growth more than anything.

Frequently asked
Did I do something during pregnancy to cause Down syndrome?
No. Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 that arises at conception. It is not caused by diet, stress, medicines or anything you did or avoided during pregnancy.
Is Down syndrome inherited from parents?
Most cases (trisomy 21) are not inherited — they happen by chance during cell division. A small proportion, the translocation type, can sometimes be inherited, which a clinician can explain with genetic counselling.
Does the mother's age cause Down syndrome?
The chance rises gently with the mother's age, but babies with Down syndrome are born to mothers of every age. Age is only one factor among many, not a cause in the everyday sense.
Can Down syndrome be cured or reversed?
It is a lifelong genetic condition, not an illness to cure. With early support, education and therapy, children with Down syndrome learn, grow and thrive towards greater independence.
