What does a first visit to a child development centre involve?

A first visit is a warm conversation and gentle play-based observation, not a test. You share your concerns and history, a clinician observes your child through a structured AbilityScore® assessment, and together you agree next steps — usually lasting 45–90 minutes.

Your Child's First Development Visit, Explained — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

The first visit isn't an exam your child can fail — it's the day someone finally listens to your whole story and starts mapping the way forward, together.

In short

A first visit to a child development centre is a warm, unhurried conversation and gentle observation — not a test. You'll share your concerns and your child's history, a clinician will watch your child play and interact, and together you'll agree on next steps. Most first visits last around 45–90 minutes, and you leave with a clearer sense of what's happening and what comes next.

What actually happens, step by step

Before you arrive — You'll usually be asked for basics: your child's birth and developmental history, any earlier reports or hearing/vision checks, and what's been worrying you. Bringing your child's vaccination card and any previous assessments helps.

The conversation (intake) — A clinician sits with you to understand your concerns in your own words: how your child communicates, plays, eats, sleeps, moves and relates to others. There are no wrong answers, and parent observations are treated as valuable clinical information.

Gentle observation and structured assessment — Your child is invited to play, explore and interact while the clinician observes communication, movement, attention and social engagement. This often takes the form of a clinician-administered AbilityScore® — a structured developmental profile across multiple domains that gives an objective baseline. To your child, it simply looks like play.

The discussion — You'll talk through what was seen, your questions are answered plainly, and you agree together on next steps — which may be a watch-and-monitor plan, further specialist input (such as a hearing check), or beginning targeted support like speech therapy.

How to prepare

  • Bring any earlier reports, hearing/vision results and the vaccination card.
  • Note 2–3 specific things you've observed at home.
  • Bring a comfort item or snack — a relaxed child shows their true abilities.
  • Come with your questions written down; no concern is too small.

What to watch

If your child is unwell, very tired or hungry on the day, it's fine to reschedule — a comfortable child shows their real abilities. Flag any recent loss of skills or sudden changes when you book, as these may warrant an earlier appointment.

Try this at home

Write down two or three specific things you've noticed at home — a real example like 'doesn't turn when I call his name across the room' tells a clinician far more than 'he seems behind'.

Frequently asked

How long does the first visit take?

Most first visits last around 45 to 90 minutes — enough time for an unhurried conversation, gentle observation of your child at play, and a discussion of next steps. It's paced around your child's comfort, not a clock.

Will my child be diagnosed on the first visit?

Not usually. The first visit builds a picture through conversation and a structured, play-based assessment. Any clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care, sometimes across more than one session.

What should I bring?

Bring any earlier reports, hearing or vision results, your child's vaccination card, a comfort item or snack, and a short note of the specific things you've observed at home. Your own observations are valuable clinical information.

Will my child have to do tests?

There are no pass-or-fail tests. The clinician invites your child to play and explore while observing communication, movement, attention and social engagement. To your child, it simply feels like playtime.
