Emotional & Behavioural Difficulties
Assessing Emotional & Behavioural Difficulties Under 7
In children under 7, emotional and behavioural difficulties are assessed through structured parent interview, direct observation of play and regulation, age-appropriate questionnaires and developmental screening — never a single test. Clinicians look for patterns that are frequent, persistent and disruptive across settings. A clinical AbilityScore® and diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle centre.
When a young child's feelings or behaviour feel bigger than the day can hold, parents ask the same thing: how do we really know what's going on?
In short
In children under 7, emotional and behavioural difficulties are assessed through careful, structured observation and conversation — never a single test or a quick label. A clinician gathers your story of how your child feels, plays, sleeps, separates and copes, observes your child directly, and compares this against what is typical for their age. The aim is to understand your child's emotional world and behaviour patterns across home, play and learning settings, so support can be matched to need. How assessment works
Because young children show distress through behaviour rather than words, assessment leans on what the people around them see every day:- Parent and caregiver interview — your detailed account of tantrums, fears, mood, sleep, eating, separation and play, and how long patterns have lasted.
- Direct observation — watching how your child plays, regulates big feelings, recovers from upset and relates to others.
- Structured questionnaires — age-appropriate, clinician-guided tools completed by parents and sometimes preschool staff to capture behaviour across settings.
- Developmental screening — checking communication, social and sensory development, because emotional behaviour is often tied to these.
A few intense moments are normal in early childhood. Clinicians look for patterns that are frequent, persistent, and getting in the way of everyday life across more than one place.

What to watch
Patterns that are frequent, last weeks, and disrupt everyday life across home and preschool — not the occasional tantrum or fear.
Try this at home
Keep a simple diary for two weeks: when big feelings or behaviours happen, what came before, and how long they last. This gives clinicians invaluable real-life detail.

Frequently asked
Can a single test diagnose emotional and behavioural difficulties in a young child?
No. There is no single test. Assessment combines your detailed account, direct observation of your child, age-appropriate questionnaires and developmental screening to build a whole picture across settings.
Is it too early to assess my child before age 7?
Not at all. Early childhood is exactly when supportive observation helps most. Clinicians focus on patterns that are persistent and disruptive, and match gentle support to need rather than rushing to label.
Who carries out the assessment?
Qualified clinicians at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only there, under clinician care, never from an online form.
