How can I support my child's Language?

Support your toddler's language by talking and narrating often, following their lead, pausing for their turn, reading daily, and singing — warm, responsive back-and-forth conversation builds vocabulary and grammar far more than screens or flashcards.

How can I support my child's Language? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every word your toddler reaches for begins with the everyday talk that fills your home — and you are already their first and best language teacher.

In short

You support your toddler's language by talking with them often, naming the world around you, reading together daily, and giving them time to respond. Between 12 and 36 months, the most powerful tool is simple back-and-forth conversation — your warm, responsive attention does more than any app or flashcard.

Everyday ways to build language

  • Narrate your day. Describe what you're doing — "Now we're washing the cup" — so your child hears words tied to real things.
  • Follow their lead. Notice what they look at or point to, then name it and add one more word: child says "ball", you say "big ball!"
  • Pause and wait. After you ask or say something, count slowly to five. That silence invites your child to take their turn.
  • Read together every day. Point to pictures, ask "Where's the dog?", and let them turn pages — books are a goldmine of new words.
  • Sing songs and rhymes. Repetition and rhythm make words stick and make sound-play joyful.
  • Reduce background screens. Live, face-to-face talk teaches language; passive screen time does not.

The science

Language grows through responsive, serve-and-return interaction — the more meaningful, turn-taking talk a child hears, the richer their vocabulary and grammar become. Quality and warmth matter more than quantity of words alone. This sits within ICF communication functions (d3) and the Nurturing Care Framework's emphasis on responsive caregiving.

What to watch

If by 16 months your toddler uses no single words, by 24 months no two-word phrases, or you notice loss of words already learned, arrange a developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Try the 'add one word' game: whatever your child says, repeat it and add one word — 'ball' becomes 'big ball', 'go' becomes 'go car'. It gently stretches their language all day.

Frequently asked

Does screen time help my toddler learn to talk?

Live, face-to-face conversation is what teaches language at this age; passive screen time does not, and too much can crowd out talk-time. Keep screens low and your own talking high.

My toddler isn't saying many words yet — should I worry?

Toddlers vary widely. Keep talking, reading and singing daily. If by 24 months your child uses no two-word phrases, or you notice loss of words, arrange a friendly developmental check for reassurance and guidance.

Is it confusing to raise my child with two languages?

No — children grow up bilingual the world over. Speak the language you are most comfortable and warm in; rich, responsive talk in any language builds strong communication.
