Vocabulary

How can I support my child's Vocabulary?

Grow your toddler's vocabulary through everyday responsive talk — naming what they look at, narrating routines, reading daily, adding one word to theirs, and pausing to let them respond. Rich, warm conversation in your home language matters far more than apps or flashcards.

Helping Your Toddler's Vocabulary Grow — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every new word your toddler learns is a tiny door swinging open — and you are the one who holds the handle.

In short

The most powerful way to grow your toddler's vocabulary is everyday, face-to-face talk woven into ordinary moments — naming things you both see, narrating what you do, and giving your child a few seconds to respond. You don't need flashcards or apps; you need responsive conversation, repetition, and shared attention. Between 12 and 36 months, words usually grow fast when language is rich, warm, and built around what your child is already interested in.

Simple ways to build words at home

  • Name what they look at. Follow your child's gaze or pointing and label it — "Yes, a dog! A big brown dog." Words stick best when they match what your child is already focused on.
  • Narrate your day. Talk through bathing, cooking and dressing — "We pour the water, now the soap." Ordinary routines are vocabulary goldmines.
  • Add one word. When your child says "ball", you say "big ball" or "red ball". This gentle stretching, called expansion, models the next step.
  • Read together daily. Point to pictures, name them, and pause for your child to fill in. Re-reading favourites builds deep familiarity.
  • Wait and watch. After you say something, count to five silently. That pause gives your toddler room to try a word back.
  • Use your home language. A strong first language builds the foundation for every language that follows — speak whichever feels natural and rich to you.

The science

Vocabulary grows through serve and return — the back-and-forth exchanges between you and your child. The number and quality of words a toddler hears, especially in responsive conversation rather than background noise, strongly shapes later language and learning. This is why narration, repetition and shared attention matter more than any screen or programme.

What to watch

If your toddler isn't using single words by around 16 months, or two-word phrases by 24 months, or seems to lose words they once used, mention it at your next developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Follow your child's pointing finger and name what they see, then pause five seconds — that shared-attention moment plus quiet space is where new words are born.

Frequently asked

How many words should my toddler have?

It varies widely. Many children have a few words around their first birthday and a fast-growing collection by two. What matters most is steady growth and that your child is trying to communicate. If you're unsure, a developmental check can reassure you.

Will speaking two languages confuse my toddler?

No. Children grow up bilingual all over the world. A strong home language builds the foundation for every language that follows, so speak whichever languages feel natural and rich to your family.

Do learning apps help vocabulary?

Live, face-to-face conversation builds vocabulary far better than screens for toddlers. Words stick through back-and-forth talk tied to what your child is doing and looking at, which apps cannot replicate.
