What to watch
Seek an eye examination promptly if your baby does not make eye contact or follow faces by 2–3 months, has cloudy or white pupils, persistent eye turning after 4 months, or unusual eye movements. Early causes are the most treatable.

Can glasses cure my child's visual impairment?
If the cause is a refractive error such as long-sight, short-sight or astigmatism, glasses can fully correct vision. But glasses cannot help vision loss caused by the optic nerve, retina or brain pathways. An ophthalmologist will identify which applies to your child.
Is congenital cataract treatable?
Yes — congenital cataracts can often be treated successfully with surgery, and outcomes are best when this happens early, while the visual system is still developing. This is one reason newborn and early eye examinations matter so much.
If my child's vision can't be restored, what can help?
