Rett Syndrome

Lifelong care for a child with Rett syndrome

A child with Rett syndrome typically needs coordinated lifelong care across communication (often eye-gaze AAC), movement, feeding, bone and spine health, breathing and heart monitoring, and seizure care, with plans reviewed as she grows. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Lifelong care for a child with Rett syndrome — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Rett syndrome asks a family to think in decades, not weeks — and with the right team beside you, each stage of your daughter's life can be met with skill, dignity and joy.

In short

A child with Rett syndrome usually needs coordinated, lifelong support across communication, movement, feeding, breathing, bone and heart health — because the condition affects the whole body and changes over the years. The good news is that needs are predictable enough to plan for, and consistent therapy plus good medical monitoring helps your child stay as comfortable, connected and capable as possible at every age. No single specialist does this alone — it is a team built around your daughter and your family.

What lifelong care often involves

  • Communication support — many girls with Rett syndrome understand far more than they can show. Eye-gaze technology and other augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools, supported by speech therapists, can unlock a lifetime of connection — this is one of the most important investments you can make.
  • Movement and hand use — loss of purposeful hand use and characteristic hand movements are common. Ongoing physiotherapy and occupational therapy help maintain mobility, posture, walking (where possible) and reduce stiffness.
  • Bone and spine health — scoliosis and low bone density are frequent, so regular orthopaedic review, positioning support and sometimes bracing or surgery are part of long-term care.
  • Feeding, growth and gut — chewing, swallowing and reflux difficulties, plus constipation, are common and benefit from feeding therapy and dietitian input to protect nutrition and comfort.
  • Breathing and heart monitoring — irregular breathing patterns and heart-rhythm (QT) considerations mean periodic cardiology and respiratory review are wise.
  • Seizure care — epilepsy is common; this needs a paediatric neurologist, not therapy alone.
  • Daily living and family support — adaptive equipment, respite, schooling support and emotional support for the whole family all matter across the lifespan.

Care shifts as your daughter grows — from early regression, through a more stable school-age period, into adult life — so the plan is reviewed and re-shaped over time, never set once and forgotten.

When to seek prompt medical review

Seek prompt medical attention for any suspected seizures, new breathing or colour changes, fainting episodes, a rapidly worsening spinal curve, choking during feeds, or sudden loss of skills. These need a doctor first, with therapy continuing alongside.

Try this at home

Offer your daughter consistent ways to communicate every day — pause, watch where her eyes go, and respond as if every glance is a word, because it often is.

Frequently asked

Does Rett syndrome get worse over time?

Rett syndrome moves through stages — often an early period of regression followed by a more stable school-age phase, then adult life with its own needs. It is not the same as steady decline. With consistent therapy and good medical monitoring, many girls stay comfortable, connected and engaged for many years, and the care plan is reviewed and adjusted as she grows.

Can my daughter learn to communicate even if she can't speak?

Very often, yes. Many girls with Rett syndrome understand far more than they can express. Eye-gaze technology and other AAC tools, guided by a speech therapist, can give her a reliable way to make choices and connect. This is one of the most valuable areas to invest in early and keep building across her life.

Which specialists make up the care team?

Usually a paediatrician or paediatric neurologist coordinating, alongside a speech therapist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, dietitian, orthopaedic specialist, and cardiology and respiratory input as needed. Therapy and medical care work together — not one instead of the other. A Pinnacle clinician can help map and coordinate this around your daughter.
