Initiation

What is Initiation in child development?

Initiation is a child's ability to start an action, request or interaction on their own, without being prompted. In toddlers it looks like pointing to ask for things, beginning play, sharing interest or coming for help. It is a foundation for communication, learning and independence, and it grows through warm everyday play. It is not a diagnosis — noticing a child who rarely starts things is simply an invitation to add gentle, early support.

That little spark when your toddler reaches for a toy, points at a bird, or toddles over to show you something — all on their own — is initiation.

In short

Initiation in child development means a child's ability to start an action, a request or an interaction on their own, without being prompted or led. For a toddler, this looks like reaching for a wanted object, pointing to share interest, beginning to play, or coming to you for help. It is a foundation skill for communication, learning and independence — and it grows naturally through warm, playful everyday moments.

What initiation looks like in toddlers

Initiation is the difference between a child who only responds when asked and one who also begins things themselves. In the 1–3 year window you might see your toddler point to ask for something, bring a book to be read, start a familiar game like peek-a-boo, call out for your attention, or move towards an activity that interests them. These small self-starts show a child is connecting their own wishes to action and to people. Initiation grows across play, language and social interaction together, and it builds steadily — some days more than others. A child who rarely starts interactions, requests or play on their own, even when comfortable and well, is simply showing you where a little gentle support may help.

When to seek a review

Consider a developmental review if, by around 18–24 months, your toddler seldom starts interactions, rarely points or gestures to share or request, or mostly waits to be led rather than beginning play themselves. This is not a verdict — it is an invitation to understand the whole child and add the right encouragement early.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form. We look at the whole picture of how your child initiates across play, language and connection, and build an individualised plan that may draw on special education and other supports as needed.

Next step — If you would like to understand how your toddler initiates and learn playful ways to encourage it, book a developmental review to map their strengths and start any helpful support early.

What to watch

By 18–24 months, rarely starting interactions, seldom pointing or gesturing to share or request, and mostly waiting to be led rather than beginning play independently.

Try this at home

Pause and wait — instead of handing your toddler what they want straight away, hold it close, look expectant and give them a moment to point, reach or vocalise first. These tiny waits invite your child to start the interaction themselves.

Frequently asked

At what age should my toddler start initiating?

Initiation grows gradually from around 12 months, with clear self-starts like pointing, requesting and beginning play emerging through 18–24 months. Children develop on their own timelines, so look at the overall pattern rather than one moment.

Is poor initiation a diagnosis?

No. Initiation is a skill we observe, not a diagnosis. A child who rarely starts interactions or play is simply showing where gentle, early support may help. Any clinical assessment happens only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under a qualified clinician.

How can I encourage my toddler to initiate more?

Pause and wait so your child has room to start, follow their lead in play, offer choices, and respond warmly whenever they point, reach or call out. These everyday moments invite self-starting without pressure.
