sensory integration therapy

What happens during sensory integration therapy sessions?

Sensory integration therapy sessions are playful, child-led activities — swinging, climbing, deep pressure, textures — guided by an occupational therapist to help a child's brain process touch, movement and balance more comfortably, with parent coaching for home. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

When a child finds noise too loud, touch too much, or movement either thrilling or frightening, the right sensory play can gently teach their brain to feel safe and ready to learn.

In short

During sensory integration therapy sessions, an occupational therapist guides your child through purposeful, playful activities — swinging, climbing, squeezing, balancing, brushing textures — chosen to give the brain the sensory input it needs in a calm, controlled way. It looks like joyful play, but each activity is carefully matched to help your child process touch, movement and balance more comfortably, so everyday tasks feel less overwhelming. Sessions are child-led, never forced, and always set at the level where your child feels safe and succeeds.

What a session actually looks like

  • A welcoming, equipped space — swings, crash mats, ball pits, climbing frames, textured surfaces and weighted items, set up to invite exploration.
  • The 'just-right challenge' — the therapist offers activities pitched just beyond what's easy, so your child stretches their skills while still feeling capable and in control.
  • Following your child's lead — children choose and steer activities; the therapist shapes the play rather than directing it, which keeps motivation high.
  • Calming and organising input — deep pressure (firm hugs, squeezing), swinging or heavy work (pushing, pulling, carrying) help a child feel regulated and settled.
  • Building tolerance gently — gradual, no-pressure exposure to textures, sounds or movement that a child finds tricky, always at their pace.
  • Parent coaching — the therapist shows you simple 'sensory diet' ideas to weave calming, organising activities into daily routines at home.

The goal is an adaptive response — your child meeting a challenge successfully — which over time helps the brain process sensation more smoothly, so dressing, eating, play and focus all become easier.

When a check helps

If your child seems unusually sensitive to everyday sounds, textures, clothing tags or food, or constantly seeks intense movement, bumps and crashes, or struggles with balance and coordination, a developmental check can clarify what's happening. An occupational therapist can tell apart ordinary preferences from sensory processing differences that benefit from support.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app or online form. What to watch

Watch for strong reactions to everyday sounds, textures, food or clothing tags, constant seeking of intense movement and crashing, or difficulty with balance and coordination during play.

Try this at home

Build in calming 'heavy work' each day — let your child push a laundry basket, carry books, have firm bear hugs or squeeze a cushion; this organising input often helps them feel settled and ready.

Frequently asked

Is sensory integration therapy just play?

It looks like play, and that's intentional — but each activity is carefully chosen by an occupational therapist to give the brain specific sensory input. The playful approach keeps children motivated while the underlying goals are precise and individual.

How long is a typical session?

Sessions usually run around 45 minutes to an hour, with the exact length and frequency shaped to your child's needs and stamina. Your therapist will recommend a schedule after assessment.

Will my child be forced into activities they dislike?

No. Sessions are child-led and pressure-free. Therapists follow your child's lead and introduce trickier sensations only gradually, always at a pace where your child feels safe and successful.

Can I help at home?

Yes — your therapist will share simple 'sensory diet' ideas such as heavy work, deep pressure and movement breaks that you can weave into daily routines to support progress between sessions.
