externalizing behaviors

What if my child isn't showing externalizing behaviors yet?

If your toddler isn't showing externalizing behaviours like hitting, biting or big tantrums, it usually means they self-regulate well, communicate their needs, or have a calm temperament — all reassuring at 12–36 months. The healthy picture is a child who is calm AND also connecting, babbling or talking, seeking you out and joining play. Seek a gentle developmental check only if calm comes with withdrawal, flat mood, few words, little eye contact or loss of a skill — this is for early support, not because anything is wrong.

No big tantrums yet? Here's what that may mean — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

If your toddler isn't pushing, hitting or melting down on the floor, you may be quietly wondering whether that's a good sign — and usually, it is.

In short

When your child is not showing externalizing behaviours — the outward, visible reactions like hitting, biting, throwing, big tantrums or defiance — it most often means they are managing their feelings and impulses well for their age, or they simply haven't hit the stage where these surface. Between 12 and 36 months a little of this is completely normal as language and self-control are still growing; its absence is reassuring, not worrying. Just keep a gentle eye that your child is still connecting, communicating and engaging in play.

What this means at 12–36 months

Externalizing behaviours are how a toddler shows big feelings outwardly before words can carry them. Not seeing much of this can mean:
  • Your child self-regulates well — they can wait, recover from upsets and accept small "no"s with growing ease.
  • Strong communication — when a child can ask, point or use words, frustration has an outlet other than hitting or screaming.
  • A calmer temperament — some children are naturally more even-keeled, and that's a lovely, valid difference.

One gentle note: very little outward emotion can sometimes go hand-in-hand with feelings turning inward (internalizing) — quietness, withdrawal, little protest. So the reassuring picture is a child who is calm and also smiling, babbling or talking, seeking you out, pointing, and joining play. If your toddler is unusually still, rarely protests and seems flat, withdrawn or delayed in talking or connecting, a developmental check is wise — not because anything is wrong, but because early eyes help most.

When to seek a check

Arrange a developmental review if calm comes with few words, little eye contact or shared joy, not responding to their name, or loss of a skill. Otherwise, a settled toddler is something to celebrate.

What to watch

A calm toddler is reassuring when they are also connecting and communicating. Seek a developmental check if low outward emotion comes with withdrawal or flat mood, few or no words, little eye contact or shared smiling, not responding to their name, or loss of a skill once had.

Try this at home

Notice not just whether your child reacts, but how they connect — do they look to you when excited or upset, point to show you things, and join in play? Shared joy matters more than the size of the reaction.

Frequently asked

Is it good that my toddler doesn't have tantrums?

Often yes — it can mean your child self-regulates well, communicates their needs, or simply has a calmer temperament. As long as they are also connecting, playing and communicating, a settled toddler is reassuring rather than a concern.

Can low outward emotion ever be a worry?

Only sometimes. If a child is unusually still, rarely protests, and also seems flat or withdrawn with delays in talking or connecting, a gentle developmental check is wise — for early support, not because anything is wrong.

What are externalizing behaviours exactly?

They are outward, visible reactions like hitting, biting, throwing, big tantrums or defiance — the way a toddler shows big feelings before words can carry them. A little is normal between 12 and 36 months as self-control grows.
