Interests
What an AbilityScore of 0–100 in Interests means
An AbilityScore of 0–100 in Interests is a clinician-read snapshot of how your child explores, engages and shares enjoyment — measured against their own baseline, not as a pass or fail. Higher bands mean these behaviours come easily; lower bands show where playful support may help. Only a Pinnacle clinician can interpret it for your child.
An AbilityScore in Interests isn't a grade on your child — it's a gentle, caring snapshot of how they explore, engage and light up with the world around them.
In short
An AbilityScore® of 0–100 in Interests describes how your child currently shows curiosity, engagement and shared enjoyment — how they explore objects, follow what catches their attention, and bring you into their delight. A higher band simply means more of these engaging behaviours are showing up easily right now; a lower band points to areas where your child may benefit from a little support to widen and share their interests. It is always read against your own child's baseline — never a pass-or-fail, and never a diagnosis. What the Interests band is actually telling you
In child development, interests are a window into social connection, attention and motivation — the spark behind learning. A clinician-administered AbilityScore® looks at gentle, everyday signals such as:- Range of interests — does your child enjoy a variety of toys, activities and play, or stay narrowly focused on a few?
- Shared enjoyment — do they look to you, point, or bring objects to show you, inviting you into the fun?
- Flexibility — can they shift from one activity to another, or move on when something ends?
- Engagement and curiosity — do they explore new things with interest, or hang back?
The number is a starting picture, not a ceiling. Children's interests blossom with the right encouragement, and the band helps your clinician shape play and therapy that build on what your child already loves.
How to read the bands, gently
Think of the 0–100 range as a soft spectrum rather than a score to chase. Lower bands flag where shared, flexible engagement may need warm support; middle bands show emerging strengths; higher bands reflect a child whose curiosity and shared enjoyment come readily. Two children with the same number can look quite different — which is exactly why a clinician interprets it alongside your child's whole story. The Pinnacle way

What to watch
Notice if your child rarely shares enjoyment with you, sticks to a very narrow set of activities, struggles to move between play, or seldom explores new toys or people — and bring these everyday observations to your assessment.
Try this at home
Follow your child's lead: join whatever delights them, name it, and gently add one small new step. Sharing their joy — pointing, showing, taking turns — is how interests widen and connection grows.

Frequently asked
Is a low Interests band a diagnosis?
No. The band is a snapshot of how your child currently explores and shares enjoyment, read against their own baseline. It is not a diagnosis — only a qualified Pinnacle clinician can interpret what it means and whether any further assessment is needed.
Can my child's Interests band change?
Yes. Children's interests grow with warm encouragement and the right playful support. The band helps your clinician build on what your child already loves, so it reflects a moment in time, not a fixed limit.
Why does Interests matter for development?
Interests are the spark behind learning and social connection — curiosity, shared enjoyment and flexibility all support attention, communication and play. Understanding them helps shape therapy your child will genuinely enjoy.
