Communication milestones for your 3-year-old

By age three, most children speak in short three-word-plus sentences, follow two-step instructions, ask questions, and are understood by familiar adults much of the time. These are guideposts, not deadlines — every child grows at their own pace, and one missed step alone is rarely a worry.

At three, your little one is becoming a real conversation partner — and there's so much to delight in along the way.

In short

Most 3-year-olds use short sentences of three or more words, are understood by familiar adults at least half to three-quarters of the time, follow two-step instructions, and ask lots of "what" and "why" questions. These are gentle guideposts, not a finishing line — children grow at their own pace, and a single missed milestone is rarely a worry on its own.

What to look for at three

Understanding (receptive)
  • Follows two-step requests — "Pick up your shoes and put them by the door"
  • Knows simple position words like in, on and under
  • Points to familiar objects and pictures when named

Talking (expressive)

  • Joins three or more words into short sentences
  • Has a steadily growing vocabulary (often hundreds of words)
  • Uses their name, asks questions, and names familiar people and things

Connecting (social communication)

  • Takes short turns in back-and-forth conversation
  • Enjoys pretend play and simple stories
  • Speech understood by familiar listeners most of the time

The science, simply

The WHO ICF places these skills in the Communication domain (d3) — both understanding and producing messages. By three, the brain's language networks are growing fast, so rich talk, songs and shared books are powerful fuel. If sentences aren't yet appearing, or strangers rarely understand your child, a speech therapy check is a calm, sensible next step — never a cause for alarm.

What to watch

Gently note if your three-year-old uses very few words, isn't joining words into short phrases, rarely follows simple two-step requests, or is hard for familiar adults to understand — and mention it at your next check.

Try this at home

Narrate your day aloud and pause often — "Shall we have a banana or an apple?" — giving your child space to choose and reply builds turn-taking and new words.

Frequently asked

How many words should a 3-year-old say?

Most three-year-olds have a vocabulary of several hundred words and string three or more together into short sentences. Counts vary widely between children, so steady growth matters more than an exact number.

Should strangers understand my 3-year-old?

Familiar adults usually understand a three-year-old most of the time, while unfamiliar listeners catch around half to three-quarters. If almost no one outside the family understands your child, a friendly speech check is worthwhile.

When should I be concerned about my 3-year-old's speech?

Consider a gentle check if your child isn't joining words into short phrases, uses very few words, doesn't follow simple two-step instructions, or has lost skills they once had. A screen offers reassurance or an early start.
