Developmental Coordination Disorder

Growing Up with Developmental Coordination Disorder

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder grow into capable, independent young people; DCD changes how movement skills are learned, not a child's intelligence or potential. Many tasks become easier with practice, the right tools and occupational therapy, and most lead full adult lives. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Growing Up with DCD: A Hopeful Guide — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Your child has a bright, capable future — DCD shapes how some skills are learned, not how far your child can go.

In short

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD, sometimes called dyspraxia) grow into capable young people who learn movement skills differently and at their own pace — many become more independent every year with the right support. DCD is a lifelong difference in coordinating movement, but it does not affect intelligence or potential. With early therapy, practical strategies and encouragement, most children steadily master daily tasks, build confidence and find activities they genuinely enjoy and excel at.

What you can expect over the years

  • Early & primary years — handwriting, doing up buttons, using cutlery, riding a bike and PE can take longer to learn. Your child may tire more quickly and feel frustrated when peers seem to manage easily. Practice, breaking skills into small steps, and the right tools (pencil grips, easy fasteners) make a real difference.
  • As skills mature — many tasks that were once hard become automatic. Children learn to plan and pace themselves, choose strengths-based hobbies (swimming, cycling at their own pace, art, music, drama, coding) and build clever workarounds. Technology — typing, voice tools, organisers — often becomes a great equaliser.
  • Emotional wellbeing — because effort is so high, watch for tiredness, low confidence or avoidance of activities. Praising effort over outcome, and celebrating progress against your child's own past, protects self-esteem powerfully.
  • Teens & adulthood — coordination differences often persist into adult life, but most young people lead full, independent lives: driving, working, studying and relationships. The earlier strategies and self-understanding are built, the smoother this journey tends to be.

DCD often travels alongside attention or learning differences, so a broad developmental picture helps tailor support.

How support helps

Occupational therapy is the cornerstone — building motor planning, daily-living skills and task strategies. Where speech, attention or learning needs sit alongside, a coordinated plan addresses the whole child. The goal is independence and confidence, not "fixing" — equipping your child to do the things that matter to them.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app or online form. From there your child receives a precise developmental profile and a strengths-based plan you can use at home and at school. What to watch

Watch for high tiredness or frustration with everyday tasks, avoidance of sport or writing, knocks to confidence and self-esteem, and difficulties that spread across handwriting, dressing, organising or attention — and seek a developmental check if these affect daily life or wellbeing.

Try this at home

Break new physical skills into small, repeatable steps and praise effort over outcome — celebrate your child's progress against their own past, not against other children.

Frequently asked

Does Developmental Coordination Disorder go away as my child grows?

DCD is a lifelong difference in how movement is coordinated, but its impact usually softens over time. Many tasks that were hard in childhood become more automatic, and with strategies, practice and the right tools, most children grow steadily more independent and confident.

Does DCD affect my child's intelligence?

No. DCD affects coordinating and planning movement, not intelligence or potential. Many children with DCD are bright and creative, and with support they do well academically and find activities they genuinely enjoy and excel at.

Will my child be able to live independently as an adult?

Most young people with DCD go on to lead full, independent adult lives — driving, working, studying and forming relationships. Coordination differences may persist, but self-understanding, practical strategies and supportive tools built early make the journey much smoother.
