Speech and Language Delay

Early Signs of Speech and Language Delay

Early signs of speech and language delay include little or no babbling and few gestures by 12 months, no single words by 16 months, fewer than ~50 words or no two-word phrases by 24 months, and weak understanding of simple instructions. Any loss of words is an urgent check. A hearing check comes first, and many late talkers catch up with early support.

Early Signs of Speech & Language Delay — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every child finds their voice on their own timeline — but some need a little help finding it, and knowing the early signs means support can start sooner.

In short

Speech and language delay shows up when a child is slower than expected to understand words, use sounds, or put words together — for reasons that aren't explained by hearing loss alone. Trust your instincts: if your little one isn't babbling, gesturing, or building new words on the usual timeline, it's worth a gentle check. Early support works beautifully, and many children catch up wonderfully.

Early signs to watch by age

Babies (by 12 months)
  • Little or no babbling ("ba-ba", "da-da")
  • Not turning to your voice or familiar sounds
  • Few gestures — no waving, pointing or reaching to be picked up

Toddlers (12–24 months)

  • No single words by around 16 months
  • Not following simple instructions like "give me the ball"
  • Few new words appearing month to month

Older toddlers (by 24 months)

  • Fewer than around 50 words, or not joining two words ("more milk")
  • Speech very hard for family to understand
  • Relying mostly on pointing or pulling you, rather than words

At any age — losing words or sounds the child once used is always worth a same-week check.

The science, simply

Understanding (receptive) language and speaking (expressive) language can develop at different speeds. Many late talkers bloom on their own, but persistent gaps across home and play settings — especially with weak comprehension — benefit from early speech therapy. A hearing check always comes first, because ears and language grow together.

What to watch

Book a same-week check if your child loses words or sounds they once used, isn't babbling or gesturing by 12 months, or has no single words by 16 months — and always arrange a hearing check alongside.

Try this at home

Narrate your day in short, clear words — name objects, pause, and wait a few seconds for any sound, gesture or word in reply. This back-and-forth 'serve and return' is the richest language practice there is.

Frequently asked

My toddler understands everything but barely speaks — is that a delay?

Strong understanding with limited speaking is a more reassuring pattern, and many such children are 'late talkers' who catch up. Still, if there are very few words by 24 months or speech is hard to understand, a gentle check helps you act early rather than wait.

Could a hearing problem be causing the delay?

Yes — even mild or fluctuating hearing loss, including from ear infections, can slow language. A hearing check is always the first step before any speech assessment.

Does being raised with two languages cause speech delay?

No. Bilingual children may mix languages and have slightly different timing, but bilingualism does not cause delay. Count words across both languages together when judging progress.
