Early Signs of Rett Syndrome in a Newborn

Rett syndrome cannot be seen or diagnosed in a newborn — babies typically develop normally for the first 6–18 months, and its features only emerge later. In the newborn period, simply observe general healthy development and attend routine well-baby checks. Only a clinician can assess developmental concerns, and any diagnosis is formed at a Pinnacle centre.

Rett Syndrome in a Newborn: What's Knowable — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

The newborn weeks are a time for cuddles, feeds and finding your rhythm together — and it helps to know what is, and isn't, knowable about Rett syndrome this early.

In short

Rett syndrome is not something that can be seen or diagnosed in a newborn. Babies with Rett syndrome typically appear to develop normally for the first 6–18 months, and the recognisable features only begin to emerge after that. In the newborn period the kindest and most accurate thing to do is simply to enjoy and observe your baby's general development, and attend your routine well-baby checks — not to scan for Rett signs that do not yet apply.

Why there are no "newborn signs" of Rett

Rett syndrome (ICD-11 LD90.0) is a genetic neurodevelopmental condition, most often linked to a change in the MECP2 gene, and it affects girls far more than boys. Its hallmark is a period of apparently typical early development followed by a slowing or regression, usually noticed between about 6 and 18 months. That is why a newborn cannot be "identified" as having Rett by looking — the very pattern that defines it has not had time to appear.

What is appropriate in the newborn period is gentle, ordinary observation of healthy development:

  • Feeding comfortably and gaining weight
  • Settling, alerting to sound, and brief eye contact as the weeks pass
  • Beginning to smile socially by around 6–8 weeks
  • Smooth, symmetrical movements of arms and legs

These are general developmental cues for any baby — not Rett-specific red flags.

When concerns about Rett become meaningful

The features parents and clinicians look for — loss of previously gained hand skills, repetitive hand movements (such as wringing or mouthing), slowing head growth, and changes in communication or walking — emerge later in infancy and toddlerhood, not at birth. If, over the coming months, you notice your baby losing skills she once had, or her head seems to grow more slowly than expected, that is the moment to seek a developmental review. For any concern about head growth, breathing or seizures at any age, see a paediatrician promptly.

What to watch

There are no Rett-specific signs in a newborn. From later infancy onward, seek a developmental review if your baby loses hand or communication skills she once had, or if her head grows more slowly than expected. See a paediatrician promptly for any concern about breathing, head growth or seizures.

Try this at home

In the newborn weeks, focus on closeness over checklists — talk, cuddle and respond to your baby's cues. This responsive connection supports healthy development and helps you notice naturally if anything changes over time.

Frequently asked

Can Rett syndrome be detected at birth?

No. Rett syndrome cannot be seen or diagnosed in a newborn. Babies with Rett typically develop normally for the first 6–18 months, and the features only begin to emerge after that period.

When do signs of Rett syndrome usually appear?

Most features — such as loss of hand skills, repetitive hand movements, slowing head growth and communication changes — emerge between about 6 and 18 months of age, after a period of apparently typical development.

What should I watch in my newborn instead?

Simply observe ordinary healthy development: comfortable feeding and weight gain, alerting to sound, brief eye contact, social smiling by around 6–8 weeks, and smooth, symmetrical movements. Attend your routine well-baby checks.

When should I seek a developmental check?

Seek a review if, over the coming months, your baby loses skills she once had or her head seems to grow slowly. For any concern about breathing, head growth or seizures, see a paediatrician promptly.
