Separation Anxiety Disorder

Common Myths About Separation Anxiety Disorder

Common myths about Separation Anxiety Disorder are that it's mere clinginess a child will outgrow, that it's caused by soft parenting, or that the child is being manipulative. In truth it's a recognised, treatable anxiety pattern; mild separation worry is normal, but persistent fear that disrupts sleep, school or daily life deserves a gentle developmental check.

A child who cries at the school gate isn't being difficult — and what you may have heard about separation anxiety often misses the truth.

In short

Separation Anxiety Disorder is widely misunderstood. The biggest myths are that it's just "clinginess" the child will outgrow on their own, that it means parents have been too soft, or that the child is simply being manipulative. In reality, it is a recognised anxiety pattern where fear of being apart from a caregiver is intense, persistent and out of step with the child's age — and it responds very well to the right support. Some separation worry is healthy and normal; it becomes a concern only when it is severe enough to disrupt sleep, school or daily life over time.

Common myths, gently corrected

  • "It's just clinginess — they'll grow out of it." Mild separation distress is a normal, healthy stage, especially in toddlers. But when intense fear persists for weeks, causes physical complaints (tummy aches, headaches) or stops a child attending school, it deserves attention rather than waiting it out.
  • "It means the parents have spoiled the child." It does not. Anxiety arises from a mix of temperament, life changes and how the brain processes worry — not from parenting failure. Warm, consistent parents have children with separation anxiety too.
  • "The child is just being manipulative or attention-seeking." The distress is genuine. Children rarely fake racing hearts, nightmares or refusal to sleep alone. Treating it as misbehaviour usually makes the fear worse.
  • "Only very young children get it." It is most common in early childhood but can appear or return in older children, often around new schools, a move or a family stress.
  • "Forcing separation will toughen them up." Abrupt, forced separations tend to heighten fear. Gradual, predictable, confidence-building steps work far better.

When to seek support

If separation fear is intense, lasts several weeks, and interferes with school, sleep or friendships, a developmental check is wise. It is also worth a conversation if your child has frequent physical complaints with no medical cause around separations, or distress that feels much bigger than the situation.

What to watch

Watch for separation fear that lasts several weeks and disrupts sleep, school attendance or friendships, frequent physical complaints (tummy aches, headaches) with no medical cause around separations, or distress that feels much bigger than the situation calls for.

Try this at home

Practise short, predictable goodbyes with a warm, consistent routine — a quick hug, a reassuring phrase, and a clear 'I'll be back after lunch'. Returning exactly when you promised builds the trust that eases separation fear far more than long, drawn-out farewells.

Frequently asked

Is separation anxiety in children normal?

Yes — mild separation distress is a normal, healthy developmental stage, especially in toddlers and young children. It becomes a possible concern only when the fear is intense, lasts for weeks, and disrupts sleep, school or daily life.

Does separation anxiety mean I've spoiled my child?

No. Separation Anxiety Disorder is not caused by soft or indulgent parenting. It arises from a mix of temperament, life changes and how a child's brain processes worry — warm, consistent parents have children with separation anxiety too.

Will my child just grow out of separation anxiety?

Many children naturally ease out of mild separation worry. But when fear is severe, persistent and interferes with school or sleep, waiting it out is not the best approach — a gentle developmental check and the right support help a child move through it confidently.

Is my child being manipulative when they refuse to separate?

The distress is genuine, not manipulation. Children rarely fake racing hearts, nightmares or physical complaints. Treating real anxiety as misbehaviour usually makes the fear worse rather than better.
