Qualifications for a TEACCH approach therapist

When you are choosing someone to guide your child through the TEACCH approach, knowing what training to look for helps you feel confident in your choice.

In short

The TEACCH approach (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped CHildren) is best delivered by a qualified professional — most often a special educator, occupational therapist, speech-language therapist, psychologist or behaviour therapist — who holds a recognised qualification in their core field and has completed dedicated TEACCH training in structured teaching. In India, look for a therapist registered with the relevant council (such as the Rehabilitation Council of India or, for speech therapists, recognised by the ASHA-equivalent Indian body) plus documented TEACCH-specific certification or supervised practice. Always ask to see both their base qualification and their TEACCH training record.

What qualifications to look for

• A recognised base professional qualification — a degree or diploma in special education, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, clinical or developmental psychology, or applied behaviour science. This is the foundation; TEACCH is a method layered on top of professional training, not a standalone profession.
• Council registration where applicable — in India, special educators and many rehabilitation professionals are registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Registration signals verified, regulated training.
• Dedicated TEACCH training — completion of a formal TEACCH structured-teaching course (introductory and, ideally, advanced or practicum-level) covering the physical structuring of the environment, visual schedules, work systems and task organisation.
• Supervised, hands-on experience — TEACCH is practical. Ask how long they have worked with autistic children using structured teaching, and whether their early practice was mentored.
• Ongoing learning — autism support evolves; a good therapist keeps their skills current and works within a wider team (occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology).

A gentle note on choosing

There is no single "TEACCH therapist" licence — it is a method used by several qualified professions. The most reassuring sign is a therapist who can clearly explain both their core qualification and their specific TEACCH training, and who places your child's strengths and comfort at the centre of every plan.
