Speech Therapy vs OT vs ABA vs Special Education

Four names, four jobs — once you know what each one actually does, choosing the right support stops feeling overwhelming.

In short

Think of it this way: speech therapy builds communication and feeding, occupational therapy builds everyday skills like hand control, sensory regulation and self-care, ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) shapes specific behaviours and learning step by step, and special education adapts how a child is taught so they can learn alongside peers. They are not rivals — most children who need one often benefit from a thoughtful blend, guided by one shared plan.

What each one does

Speech & language therapy — helps a child understand and use language, speak clearly, communicate in any form (including gestures or devices), and eat and swallow safely. It's the right starting point when the worry is talking, understanding, or feeding.

Occupational therapy (OT) — helps a child manage the "occupations" of childhood: holding a pencil, dressing, using cutlery, balance and coordination, and calming an over- or under-sensitive body. It's the right fit when the worry is daily-living skills, fine motor control, or sensory processing.

ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) — a structured, data-led approach that breaks skills into small steps and uses encouragement to build helpful behaviours and reduce ones that get in the way of learning. Often used to support communication, social and self-help skills, especially for autistic children.

Special education — not therapy but teaching: trained educators adapt lessons, pace and materials to how your child learns best, often in school or a learning-support setting.

How they fit together

The simplest way to picture it: therapy builds the underlying abilities, special education adapts the learning. A child might see a speech therapist for words, an OT for handwriting and an educator who reshapes classroom tasks — all aiming at the same goals. The key is one coordinated plan rather than four separate ones pulling in different directions.
