Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) vs speech and language therapy

ABA vs Speech and Language Therapy: The Difference

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and speech and language therapy (SLT) differ in focus and in who delivers them. ABA is broad — it shapes behaviour, learning and daily-living skills through structured, reward-based teaching led by behaviour analysts. SLT is focused on communication — understanding language, speaking, articulation, social communication and sometimes feeding — led by speech-language pathologists. They are not rivals; many children benefit from both, with the right mix decided after a proper assessment.

ABA vs Speech and Language Therapy — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Two of the most talked-about therapies for children — and parents often wonder which one their child actually needs.

In short

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and speech and language therapy (SLT) are different in what they target and who delivers them. ABA focuses on understanding and shaping behaviour, learning and daily-living skills using structured, reward-based teaching. SLT focuses specifically on communication — understanding language, speaking, articulation, social communication and sometimes feeding and swallowing. Many children benefit from one, the other, or both working together, and the right mix is decided after a proper assessment.

How they differ

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is delivered by behaviour analysts and trained therapists. It looks at how a child learns and behaves, breaks skills into small achievable steps, and uses encouragement and consistent strategies to build new skills — from following instructions and play, to attention, self-care and reducing behaviours that get in the child's way. Its scope is broad: behaviour, learning readiness and everyday independence.

Speech and language therapy (SLT) is delivered by speech-language pathologists. It targets communication directly: understanding words (receptive language), using words and sentences (expressive language), clarity of speech sounds (articulation), stammering, social back-and-forth communication, and in some children, safe eating and swallowing.

The simplest way to hold it: ABA is broad behaviour and learning; SLT is focused communication. They are not rivals — for a child with autism, for example, SLT may build the words and gestures while behavioural strategies help the child use them across home and school. Good teams share goals so the child hears one consistent message.

Choosing the right support

The deciding factor is your child's individual profile, not the label of the therapy. A child whose main hurdle is talking, being understood, or following conversation often leads with SLT. A child who needs help with attention, daily routines, learning readiness and a wider set of skills may benefit from a behavioural approach alongside it. This is why a structured assessment comes before any plan.

The Pinnacle way

What to watch

Whether your child's main hurdle is communication (understanding words, talking, being understood, conversation) or broader (attention, daily routines, learning readiness, behaviour) — this helps point toward speech therapy, behavioural support, or both together.

Try this at home

Whichever therapy your child has, carry it into everyday moments: name objects and actions during play and meals, give clear simple instructions, and celebrate every small attempt at communicating or following through — consistency at home multiplies the gains.

Frequently asked

Can a child have both ABA and speech therapy at the same time?

Yes. Many children benefit from both, and a coordinated team shares goals so the child gets one consistent message across home, therapy and school. The right combination is decided after a proper assessment of your child.

Which therapy is better for autism?

Neither is automatically 'better' — it depends entirely on your child's profile. Speech and language therapy may build communication, while behavioural strategies help the child use those skills in everyday life. A clinician will recommend the right blend after assessment.

Who delivers each therapy?

Speech and language therapy is delivered by speech-language pathologists who specialise in communication. ABA is delivered by behaviour analysts and trained therapists who focus on behaviour, learning and daily-living skills.

If my child can't talk yet, do they need speech therapy or ABA?

A child whose main hurdle is talking or being understood usually leads with speech and language therapy, which can include gestures and other ways to communicate. If attention, routines and learning readiness are also areas of need, behavioural support may run alongside. An assessment makes this clear.
