What is Speech readiness, and how is it built?

Speech readiness is the set of early skills a child builds before talking — listening, eye contact, babbling, turn-taking, understanding words, and gesturing like pointing. It is not a diagnosis but a foundation laid through warm everyday back-and-forth: naming what a child sees, pausing for their reply, singing, reading and responding to every attempt to communicate. Strong readiness shows in pointing, rich babble and understanding familiar words, even before clear speech arrives.

Speech Readiness: What It Is & How to Build It — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Long before a first clear word arrives, a child is quietly gathering the building blocks for it — that gathering is speech readiness.

In short

Speech readiness is the bundle of early skills a child builds before talking takes off — listening and turning to sounds, making eye contact, babbling, taking turns in "conversation", understanding simple words, and using gestures like pointing and waving. It is not a single test or a diagnosis. Think of it as the foundation being laid so that words, when they come, have somewhere to stand.

How speech readiness is built

Speech readiness grows through warm, everyday back-and-forth — not flashcards. It rests on several threads woven together: hearing and attention (turning to your voice), social connection (sharing eye contact and smiles), understanding (responding to names and simple requests), gesture (pointing to ask or show), and sound play (cooing, babbling, copying sounds). You build it simply by talking through your day, naming what your child looks at, pausing to let them "reply" with sounds or gestures, singing, reading picture books, and responding warmly every time they try to communicate. Each loving exchange — what experts call "serve and return" — strengthens the pathway to spoken words. A child who points, babbles richly and understands familiar words is showing strong readiness, even before clear speech appears.

When to seek a review

Consider a developmental review if your child shows little babble by around 9–12 months, isn't pointing or gesturing by 12–15 months, doesn't respond to their name, or seems not to hear soft sounds. These are gentle invitations to look closer — never a verdict.

What to watch

Little or no babble by 9–12 months, no pointing or gesturing by 12–15 months, not responding to their name, or seeming not to hear soft sounds.

Try this at home

Talk through your day and name what your child looks at, then pause — give them a few seconds to 'reply' with a sound, smile or gesture, and respond warmly every time they try.

Frequently asked

Is speech readiness the same as talking?

No. Speech readiness is the bundle of skills built before clear words appear — listening, babbling, turn-taking, understanding and gesturing. These foundations make spoken words possible later.

How can I build my child's speech readiness at home?

Talk through your day, name what your child looks at, pause for them to respond with sounds or gestures, sing, read picture books, and warmly answer every attempt to communicate.

When should I seek help about speech readiness?

Consider a developmental review if there's little babble by 9–12 months, no pointing by 12–15 months, no response to their name, or signs of not hearing soft sounds.
