How to build speech readiness in your child

Speech readiness is built through everyday responsive connection — narrating your day, pausing for turns, following your child's lead, singing, reading and reducing background noise — which grows the listening, attention and sound skills real speech rests on. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

How to build speech readiness in your child — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Long before a child's first clear word, they are quietly building everything that word will stand on — and you are their best teacher.

In short

You build speech readiness through everyday connection, not drills. Talking, singing, naming, pausing for your child to respond, and lots of back-and-forth play all grow the listening, attention and sound skills that real speech rests on. The richer the everyday language around your child, the more ready they become to use words of their own.

How to build it day to day

  • Narrate your day — say what you're doing in simple words: "Up the stairs… open the door… here's your cup." Your child soaks in the rhythm and meaning of language.
  • Pause and wait — after you speak, leave a gentle silence. This invites your child to take a turn with a sound, gesture or word. Conversation is a two-way game.
  • Follow their lead — name whatever your child is looking at or reaching for. Words learned in a moment of interest stick best.
  • Sing, rhyme and read together — songs and simple picture books build sound awareness, memory and the joy of shared attention.
  • Reduce background noise — turn off the TV during play and meals so your child can tune in to your voice.
  • Respond to every attempt — when your child babbles, points or gestures, treat it as meaningful and reply warmly. This teaches that communication works.

Why this works

Speech readiness is built on listening, joint attention, turn-taking and the small mouth movements behind sounds. These grow through thousands of warm, responsive moments — what researchers call "serve and return." You don't need flashcards; you need connection.

What to watch

Watch for whether your child turns to your voice, takes turns with sounds or gestures, babbles, points to share interest, and responds to simple words — these readiness signs matter more than first words alone.

Try this at home

Pause after you speak. Leave a few seconds of silence so your child can fill it with a sound, gesture or word — every reply teaches them that communication works.

Frequently asked

At what age should I start building speech readiness?

From birth. Talking, singing and responding to your baby's coos and babbles builds the foundations of speech long before the first word appears.

Do I need flashcards or apps to build speech readiness?

No. Warm, everyday back-and-forth conversation, reading and play do far more than any flashcard. Connection is the key ingredient.

When should I seek a speech check?

If your child isn't babbling, responding to their name, sharing attention or using gestures as expected for their age, a friendly developmental check at a Pinnacle centre can offer reassurance and guidance.
