One Everyday Therapy Activity for a Sensory-Seeking Child

A simple home 'heavy work' obstacle path — pushing, crawling, carrying and jumping — gives a sensory-seeking child the deep-pressure and movement input their body craves, helping them feel calmer and more focused. It's safe everyday support for ages 3–7, not a diagnosis.

When a child crashes, jumps, spins and squeezes into everything, they aren't being naughty — they're hunting for the sensory input their body craves. One good activity can feed that need and bring calm.

In short

Try a "heavy work" obstacle path at home — crawling, pushing, carrying and jumping in a short sequence. This kind of deep-pressure and muscle activity (called proprioceptive input) gives a sensory-seeking child the strong sensations they look for, in a safe and organised way. It often helps a child feel calmer, more focused and more settled afterwards.

Your everyday activity: the heavy-work path

Set up a simple circuit your child repeats 3–4 times:
  • Push a laundry basket loaded with books or pillows across the room
  • Crawl under a low table or through cushions like a tunnel
  • Carry a slightly heavy bag of toys to a basket and tip it out
  • Jump off a low step or do five big jumps to finish

Keep it playful, follow their lead, and let them do it as often as they enjoy. Ten minutes before homework, mealtimes or bedtime works beautifully.

Why it works

Sensory seeking is the brain's healthy drive for more input — touch, movement and especially deep pressure through muscles and joints. Pushing, pulling, carrying and jumping deliver exactly that, helping the nervous system feel organised and regulated. Therapists call this "heavy work," and it's a core part of occupational therapy you can safely do at home. Children aged 3–7 usually love it precisely because it answers a real need rather than suppressing it.

What to watch

Notice whether the activity calms your child or over-excites them — every child differs. If sensory seeking disrupts daily life, sleep or safety across home and school, that's worth a developmental check rather than more activity alone.

Try this at home

Slot 10 minutes of heavy work — pushing a loaded basket, crawling, carrying and jumping — before transitions like homework, meals or bedtime to help your child settle.

Frequently asked

How often can my child do this heavy-work activity?

As often as they enjoy it — there's no harm. Many families use it 2–3 times a day, especially before transitions like homework, meals or bedtime, when a child often needs help settling.

Is sensory seeking something to worry about?

Not on its own. Many children seek extra movement and pressure as part of healthy play. It's worth a developmental check only if it disrupts daily life, safety, sleep or learning across several settings.

Does this replace occupational therapy?

No. It's everyday home support that complements professional care. An occupational therapist can build a personalised 'sensory diet' suited to your child's specific profile.
