What is Behaviours in child development?

In child development, behaviours are the everyday actions, reactions and emotional responses a toddler shows — how they play, protest, seek comfort and explore. Between 1 and 3 years, behaviour is a window into how a child manages feelings and connects with others. It is not a diagnosis but a way to understand emotional and social growth, and most behaviours respond well to warm routines and, where needed, playful guidance.

Every wave, wail and wobble is a toddler telling us something — behaviour is their earliest language of feelings and needs.

In short

In child development, behaviours are the everyday actions, reactions and emotional responses a toddler shows — how they play, share, calm down, protest, seek comfort or explore the world. Between roughly 1 and 3 years, behaviour is a window into how a child is learning to manage big feelings and connect with people. It is not a diagnosis — it is one of the richest ways to understand how your child is growing emotionally and socially.

What behaviours tell us at this age

Toddler behaviour develops alongside emotions and self-control. You may see joy, frustration, clinginess, curiosity, tantrums, turn-taking, copying others and testing limits — all of which are typically normal parts of growing up. What clinicians gently watch is the pattern over time: how a child settles after upset, how they respond to familiar people, whether they seek shared attention and play, and whether everyday routines feel manageable for the family. Behaviour that is very intense, very rigid, or that keeps a child from joining play or comfort is simply an invitation to look closer — never a verdict. Most behaviours respond beautifully to warm, consistent routines and, where needed, playful guidance.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form. Our team looks at the whole picture of behaviours and emotional growth, then builds an individualised plan that may draw on behaviour therapy as needed.

Next step — If you would like to understand your toddler's behaviour and emotional growth, book a developmental review to map their strengths and start any helpful support early.

What to watch

Behaviour that is very intense or very rigid, difficulty settling after upset, not seeking comfort from familiar people, or struggling to join shared play — noticed as a pattern over time rather than a single moment.

Try this at home

Name the feeling behind the behaviour — 'you're cross because we stopped playing' — and offer a calm routine. Naming emotions and keeping predictable routines helps toddlers learn to manage big feelings.

Frequently asked

Are tantrums a normal toddler behaviour?

Yes — tantrums are a typical part of toddler development as children learn to manage big feelings before they have the words for them. Warm, consistent routines usually help. If tantrums are very intense or frequent and disrupt everyday life, a developmental review can offer guidance.

When should I be concerned about my toddler's behaviour?

Watch the pattern over time rather than one moment. If your child rarely seeks comfort, struggles to settle, avoids shared play, or shows very rigid behaviours that keep them from joining family life, it is worth a gentle developmental review — not a cause for alarm.

Can behaviour change with support?

Yes. Most toddler behaviours respond well to predictable routines, naming emotions and playful guidance. Where extra help is useful, behaviour therapy can build skills gently — always shaped to the individual child.
