Reassess — step 6

What is a developmental reassessment and why does it matter?

A developmental reassessment is a planned, repeat check of your child's progress — a fresh structured look at where their skills sit now compared with the baseline set when support began. It matters because children change: goals are met, new areas emerge, and the plan must adjust to stay precise. Carried out by a qualified clinician, it asks what has changed, what is working and what to do next — turning therapy into a living, responsive partnership rather than a fixed prescription.

Developmental Reassessment: Why It Matters — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Children grow and change — and so should the plan that supports them.

In short

A developmental reassessment is a planned, repeat check of your child's progress — a fresh structured look at where their skills sit now, compared with where they were when therapy or support began. It matters because children change, goals are met, and the right next steps only become clear when we measure progress honestly and adjust the plan. Reassessment is step 6 of your child's journey: not a one-off event, but a rhythm of review that keeps support precise, current and truly yours.

Why reassessment matters

When support starts, a baseline is set and goals are chosen. But development is not a straight line — a child may surge ahead in language while play or motor skills need more time, or a goal once thought distant may already be within reach. A reassessment, carried out by a qualified clinician, looks again at communication, play, movement, learning and daily-living skills, and asks three simple questions: What has changed? What is working? What should we do next?

This protects against two quiet risks — continuing a plan that a child has already outgrown, and missing an emerging area that now deserves attention. It also celebrates genuine wins with you, so families can see progress, not just hope for it. Reassessment turns therapy from a fixed prescription into a living, responsive partnership.

When it happens

Reassessment is typically scheduled at sensible intervals through the support journey, and also whenever you or the team notice a meaningful shift — a new skill, a plateau, a school transition, or a fresh concern. There is no need to wait for a 'review date' if something changes; flag it, and the plan can be revisited.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form. Reassessment is built into our reassess step, drawing on the same structured, clinician-administered assessment used at the start, so progress is measured like-for-like. From there we refresh goals across speech therapy and other domains as your child grows.

Next step — If it has been a while since your child's last review, book a developmental reassessment to celebrate progress and set the right next goals.

What to watch

Signs that a reassessment is due: a new skill or sudden leap, a plateau where progress seems to have paused, an upcoming school or care transition, or a fresh concern in communication, play, movement or learning that wasn't there before.

Try this at home

Keep a simple progress diary — jot down new words, new play, or things your child now does independently. Bring it to each review; these everyday observations help the clinician see real-world change between visits.

Frequently asked

How often should my child have a developmental reassessment?

Reassessments are usually scheduled at sensible intervals through your child's support journey, and also whenever there is a meaningful change — a new skill, a plateau, a school transition or a fresh concern. You don't need to wait for a set date; flag any change and the plan can be revisited with your clinician.

Is a reassessment the same as the first assessment?

It uses the same kind of structured, clinician-administered assessment so progress can be measured like-for-like, but its purpose is comparison — it looks at what has changed since baseline, what is working, and what the next goals should be.

Will a reassessment change my child's therapy plan?

Often, yes — and that is the point. Goals that have been met are celebrated and retired, areas that need more time continue, and any newly emerging needs are added, so the plan stays current and truly suited to your child.
