running skills

What if my child isn't yet showing running skills?

Running usually appears between 18 months and 2 years and grows smoother by ages 3–4. A child who walks well but isn't yet running freely is most often showing normal variation, not a problem. Seek a gentle developmental check if running is absent well past 2.5 years, or if there are frequent falls, stiffness, floppiness or loss of skills — a reason to observe, not a diagnosis.

My Child Isn't Running Yet — What It Means — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

If your little one is full of energy but hasn't quite found their running stride yet, your watchful eye is exactly what helps them along.

In short

Running usually emerges between 18 months and 2 years, and becomes smoother and more confident through ages 3–4. If your child between 3 and 7 walks well but isn't yet running freely, it most often reflects normal variation in pace, temperament or practice — not a problem. It becomes worth a gentle developmental check if running is absent well past age 2–2.5, or if it comes alongside frequent falls, stiffness, floppiness or loss of skills your child once had. This is a reason to observe, not a diagnosis.

What to watch

Children build running on a foundation of walking, balance and core strength, and they get there at their own tempo. Worth a clinician's eye:
  • No running at all by around 2.5–3 years, when walking is well established.
  • Very frequent falls, tripping, or seeming unsteady compared with same-age children.
  • Stiff, floppy or asymmetric movement — favouring one side, or legs that look very tight or very loose.
  • Tiring very quickly, or strong avoidance of active play.
  • Loss of a motor skill your child clearly had before — this always deserves prompt review.

If your child runs but looks a little clumsy, that is usually just practice catching up. Movement skills bloom with safe space, time and play.

The science

Gross-motor milestones (ICF domain d4, mobility) follow a broad but predictable sequence. Running needs balance, leg strength and the confidence to lift both feet off the ground. The range is wide and healthy — but persistent gaps or asymmetry are signals to look closer early, because timely support works best.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online list. Our clinicians build your child's own movement baseline and shape playful support around strengths. What to watch

Seek a check if there is no running at all by around 2.5–3 years (with walking well established), very frequent falls or unsteadiness, stiff/floppy or one-sided movement, tiring very quickly or avoiding active play — or any loss of a motor skill your child once had.

Try this at home

Give short bursts of safe, open-space play every day — chasing bubbles, gentle races to a parent, or stepping over cushions. Keep a quick weekly note of new movement skills to share with a clinician.

Frequently asked

At what age should my child start running?

Most children begin running between 18 months and 2 years, with smoother, more confident running emerging through ages 3–4. The range is wide and healthy.

Is it a problem if my 3-year-old runs but looks clumsy?

Usually not. Clumsy running at this age most often means coordination and balance are still catching up with practice. Safe space and active play help it bloom.

When should I seek a developmental check?

If running is absent well past 2.5 years with walking well established, or if you see frequent falls, stiffness, floppiness, one-sided movement, very quick tiring, or loss of a skill once had.
