What it means if your child cannot run yet

Running usually emerges between 18 months and 2 years and grows smoother through ages 3 to 5. If your child isn't running yet, it often means they're building strength, balance and coordination at their own pace — not a diagnosis. But clear delay for their age, clumsiness, quick tiring, one-sidedness or any loss of skill is reason for a gentle developmental check, because early support works best.

My Child Isn't Running Yet — What It Means — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

If you're watching the other children dash across the playground and wondering why yours hasn't joined in yet, that careful eye is a real gift to your child.

In short

Running usually emerges between 18 months and 2 years, becoming smoother and more confident through ages 3 to 5. If your child isn't running yet, in most cases it simply means they are building the strength, balance and coordination at their own pace — it is not a diagnosis. But if running is clearly delayed for their age, or paired with other movement worries, a gentle developmental check is the wise next step, because early support works best.

What to watch (ages 3–7)

Running is a gross-motor milestone that builds on walking, balance and core strength. Gentle flags worth a clinician's eye include:
  • By age 3 — not yet running at all, or running very stiffly with frequent falls.
  • Strength & balance — tires very quickly, can't climb stairs with alternating feet, or struggles to stand on one foot briefly.
  • Coordination — very clumsy or awkward movement, or strongly avoiding active play with other children.
  • Any regression — losing a movement skill they clearly had before. This always deserves prompt review.
  • One-sidedness — favouring one side of the body, or one leg dragging.

These point to a check, not a conclusion. Many children simply need a little more practice and confidence on their feet.

When to act

If running is well behind their age, several flags appear together, or your instinct says something is off, arrange a developmental check now. Parent observation is good clinical data.

What to watch

By age 3, seek a check if your child isn't running at all or runs very stiffly with frequent falls, tires very quickly, can't climb stairs with alternating feet, is very clumsy or awkward, avoids active play, favours one side or drags a leg — or has lost any movement skill they once had.

Try this at home

Make movement playful: chase games, gentle obstacle courses with cushions, kicking a soft ball, and climbing at the park all build the strength and balance that running needs. Keep a short weekly note of new movement skills to share with a clinician.

Frequently asked

At what age should my child be running?

Most children begin running between 18 months and 2 years, with smoother, more confident running developing through ages 3 to 5. If your child isn't running by age 3, a gentle developmental check is wise.

Is not running yet a sign of a serious problem?

Usually not. Many children simply need more time, strength and practice. But if running is clearly delayed for their age, or paired with clumsiness, quick tiring, one-sidedness or loss of skills, a clinician should review it.

How can I help my child build running skills at home?

Play active games like chasing, kicking a soft ball, climbing at the park and gentle obstacle courses. These build the core strength, balance and coordination that running depends on.
