relating to people

What it means if your toddler is not yet relating to people

If your toddler is not yet relating to people — sharing eye contact, smiles, pointing or joining in — it is not a diagnosis. Between 12 and 36 months these skills bloom at different rates. It simply means a developmental check is wise now, because early, playful support works best. A clinician can build a clear baseline and shape warm support around your child's strengths.

When your toddler seems wrapped up in their own world rather than reaching out to you, your gentle noticing is exactly the kind of care that helps them most.

In short

If your child is not yet showing strong signs of relating to people — making eye contact, sharing smiles, pointing to show you things, or wanting to join in — it does not mean a diagnosis. Between 12 and 36 months, these social skills bloom at different rates for every child. What it means is simply this: it is a sensible moment for a developmental check, because early, playful support works wonderfully when started early.

What to watch between 12 and 36 months

"Relating to people" (ICF domain d7) covers how your child connects, responds and joins in with others. Gentle flags worth a clinician's eye include:
  • Connection — little eye contact, rarely sharing a smile back, or not lighting up when you enter the room.
  • Sharing — not pointing to show you something interesting, or not bringing toys to share by ~18–24 months.
  • Response — not turning to their name by ~12–15 months, or seeming not to notice when others are near.
  • Joining in — little interest in simple back-and-forth games like peekaboo, or in copying what you do.
  • Any loss — if your child once smiled, waved or babbled to people and has stopped, this always deserves prompt review.

Many toddlers who are slow to relate simply need a little more time and warm, playful encouragement — and they flourish.

The science

Social relating is one of the earliest and most trainable skills. Responsive, face-to-face play — naming feelings, following your child's lead, lots of warm turn-taking — strengthens these connections. A check now builds a clear baseline so any small differences become early opportunities, never labels.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online list. Our clinicians build your child's own developmental baseline and shape playful support around their strengths. What to watch

Between 12 and 36 months, seek a check if there is little eye contact or shared smiling, no turning to their name by ~12–15 months, no pointing to show you things by ~18–24 months, little interest in peekaboo or copying you — or any loss of social skills your child once had.

Try this at home

Sit face-to-face at your child's level each day for a few minutes of warm, follow-their-lead play — copy their sounds and actions, pause, and wait for them to respond. These tiny turn-taking moments are powerful builders of social connection.

Frequently asked

Does not relating to people mean my toddler has autism?

No. On its own it is not a diagnosis. Many toddlers simply need more time and warm, playful encouragement. It means a developmental check is sensible now, so a clinician can build a clear picture and start early support if helpful.

At what age should my toddler be pointing and sharing?

Most children begin pointing to show you things and sharing interest around 12–18 months, with this growing through 24 months. If you don't see this by around 18–24 months, a gentle check is wise.

What can I do at home to encourage social connection?

Get down to your child's level for face-to-face play, follow their lead, copy their sounds and actions, and use lots of warm back-and-forth games like peekaboo. Pause and wait for them to respond — these small moments build relating.
