What it means if your toddler isn't showing socialisation yet

If your toddler (1–3 years) isn't yet showing much socialisation, it usually means social skills are still emerging at their own pace — not a diagnosis. Parallel and solo play are normal. Seek a developmental screen if several social signs (eye contact, pointing, responding to name, imitation) are missing together, or if any skills are lost, because early support works best.

Noticing that your little one isn't yet warming up to other children is a thoughtful, loving observation — and it deserves a gentle, clear answer.

In short

If your toddler (roughly 1–3 years) is not yet showing much socialisation — sharing smiles, watching other children, waving, or playing alongside others — it usually means their social skills are still emerging at their own pace, not that something is wrong. Social growth in toddlers is uneven and very normal. It becomes worth a developmental check when several social signs are missing together, or when you simply feel something is off — because early observation creates early opportunity, never a label.

What to watch (12–36 months)

Socialisation (in the ICF this sits under d7 — interpersonal interactions) blossoms gradually. Most toddlers play near other children before they truly play with them, so solo or parallel play is perfectly typical. Gentle flags worth a clinician's eye include:
  • Little shared connection — rarely making eye contact, smiling back, or sharing a moment of joy with you.
  • Not pointing or showing — not pointing to interesting things or bringing toys to show you by ~18 months.
  • Limited response to people — not responding to their name, or showing little interest in other people.
  • No simple pretend or copying — not imitating your gestures, claps or simple play by age 2.
  • Any loss of skills — losing social warmth, words or gestures they clearly had before. This always deserves prompt review.

Seeing one of these in isolation is rarely cause for worry; a cluster of them, sustained over time, is a reason to assess — not to fear.

When to seek a check

If you recognise several of these together, or your instinct tells you to look closer, arrange a developmental screen now. A parent's noticing is good clinical data, and earlier support is always gentler and more effective.

What to watch

Between 12–36 months, seek a check if there's little eye contact or shared smiling, no pointing or showing things by ~18 months, no response to their name, little interest in other people, no simple imitation or pretend play by 2 — or any loss of social warmth, words or gestures once present. One sign alone is rarely a worry; a cluster sustained over time is a reason to assess.

Try this at home

Build social moments into everyday play: sit face-to-face for peek-a-boo, copy your child's sounds and actions so they learn turn-taking, and narrate what you both do. Short, joyful, repeated bursts of shared attention grow socialisation far more than any toy.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for my toddler to play alone instead of with other children?

Yes. Most toddlers play near other children (parallel play) before they truly play together, and solo play is completely typical at this age. Genuine cooperative play usually develops later, often around 3–4 years.

When should I be concerned about my toddler's social development?

Consider a developmental screen if several social signs are missing together — little eye contact, no pointing or showing things by ~18 months, no response to their name, or no imitation — or if your child loses social skills they once had. A single sign in isolation is rarely a worry.

Does a lack of socialisation mean my child has autism?

No. Delayed socialisation can have many causes and is not a diagnosis of anything. It simply means a clinician should observe your child's whole pattern of development. A diagnosis is only ever formed at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

How can I help my toddler socialise more at home?

Lead with face-to-face play — peek-a-boo, copying their sounds, turn-taking games — and arrange short, calm play opportunities with one other child rather than large groups. Joyful, repeated shared attention builds social skills best.
