What a delay in Expression means for your toddler

A delay in Expression means your toddler is using fewer words, sounds or gestures to share what they want than we'd typically expect for their age — it is not a diagnosis and doesn't tell us why yet. Many late talkers catch up beautifully, especially with language-rich, playful days. Seek a gentle developmental check if there are few words by 18 months, no two-word phrases by 24 months, no pointing or gesturing, or loss of words once used. A hearing check is often a sensible first step. Early support works best, so understanding the picture early makes helping easier.

Noticing that your little one isn't talking quite as much as their friends — and pausing to ask why — is loving, attentive parenting.

In short

A delay in Expression simply means your toddler is using fewer words, sounds or gestures to share what they want and feel than we'd typically expect for their age — it is not a diagnosis, and it doesn't tell us why yet. Many toddlers are wonderful 'late talkers' who catch up beautifully, especially with playful, language-rich days. The reason to arrange a gentle developmental check is that early support works best — the earlier we understand the picture, the easier it is to help.

What to watch at 12–36 months

Expression is how your child sends messages out — through words, pointing, gestures, sounds and, later, little sentences. Reassuring signs of healthy expression, and gentle flags worth a clinician's eye, include:
  • By around 12–15 months — babbling with intent, pointing, waving, and a first word or two.
  • By around 18 months — using several single words and gesturing to ask for things.
  • By around 24 months — joining two words together ("more milk", "daddy go") and a growing word bank.
  • Gentle flags — very few or no words by 18 months, no two-word phrases by 24 months, not pointing or gesturing to share, or losing words once used. Loss of any skill always deserves prompt review.

Delays in Expression can sit on their own, or travel alongside understanding (receptive language), hearing, or social communication — which is exactly why a calm professional look is so useful. A hearing check is often a sensible first step too.

When to act

If your child has few words by 18 months, isn't combining words by two, or has lost words they once used, arrange a developmental check now rather than waiting. Your daily observations are valuable clinical information — trust them.

What to watch

Arrange a developmental check if your toddler has very few or no words by 18 months, isn't combining two words by 24 months, doesn't point or gesture to share, or has lost words once used. Loss of any skill always deserves prompt review. A hearing check is often a sensible first step alongside a language review.

Try this at home

Narrate your day in short, simple words — "big spoon", "shoes on", "bye-bye car" — and pause expectantly after you speak, giving your child a few seconds to respond with a word, sound or gesture. These little waits invite expression.

Frequently asked

Is a delay in Expression the same as a diagnosis?

No. A delay in Expression simply describes that your toddler is using fewer words, sounds or gestures than typical for their age. It tells us to look more closely — not what the cause is. Only a qualified clinician at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre can form an assessment and any diagnosis.

My toddler understands everything but barely talks — should I worry?

Understanding well while talking little is common and often reassuring, but it's still worth a gentle check. A clinician can look at expression, understanding and hearing together to make sure your child has every support to start sharing words confidently.

Could a hearing problem cause an Expression delay?

Yes — even mild or fluctuating hearing difficulty can quietly slow expressive language. That's why a hearing check is often a sensible first step alongside a speech and language review.

Will my late talker catch up?

Many toddlers who start slowly catch up beautifully, especially with language-rich, playful days and early support. The earlier we understand the picture, the easier it is to help — which is why an early check is so valuable.
