Communication

Newborn Communication Milestones (0–3 Months)

Newborns (0–3 months) communicate through crying, calming to a familiar voice, brief eye contact, and — around 6–8 weeks — first social smiles and cooing. They have no words or babble yet, and that is completely normal. Respond warmly to every cry and coo to build the foundation for language.

Newborn Communication Milestones, Explained Warmly — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Your newborn is already communicating — long before their first word, they speak in cries, gazes and tiny turns toward your voice.

In short

A newborn (0–3 months) does not yet have words or babble, and that is exactly right. At this age, early communication shows up as crying to signal needs, calming to a familiar voice, briefly meeting your eyes, and — towards 6–8 weeks — the first social smiles and soft cooing sounds. These are the seeds of language, and they grow through everyday warmth, not drills.

What to look for in the early weeks

0–1 month
  • Cries to express hunger, discomfort or tiredness
  • Startles or stills to a sudden, loud sound
  • Begins to settle when held and spoken to softly

1–3 months

  • Quietens or turns towards your voice
  • Holds eye contact for a few seconds during feeds and cuddles
  • First social smiles in response to your face (around 6–8 weeks)
  • Early cooing — soft vowel sounds like "ahh" and "ooh"

Milestones arrive in a window, not on a fixed day. A baby born early may reach these a little later, counting from the due date.

The science, simply

Newborns are wired for connection. The World Health Organization's ICF frames communication (d3) as a back-and-forth — your baby listens, watches, and responds, and your warm reply teaches them that their signals work. Every time you respond to a cry or coo, you are building the foundation for speech and language.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — never from an online list. If your baby never seems to react to sound, or you have any worry, a gentle developmental check is the right, reassuring next step, and our speech therapy team can guide early communication play.

What to watch

Speak to your doctor if your baby never startles or stills to loud sounds, doesn't calm to your voice, makes no eye contact by 3 months, or seems unusually limp or unresponsive — these warrant a prompt hearing and developmental check.

Try this at home

Talk, sing and make eye contact during feeds and nappy changes — pause after your baby coos and 'reply', as if having a real conversation. These turns teach your baby that communication works.

Frequently asked

Should my newborn be babbling yet?

No — babbling (repeated sounds like 'ba-ba') usually starts around 6 months. In the first three months, expect crying, cooing and soft vowel sounds instead. That is exactly on track.

When do newborns start to smile at me?

The first true social smile in response to your face typically appears around 6 to 8 weeks. If it hasn't arrived by about 3 months, mention it at your next check — often it simply needs a little more time.

How do I know my newborn can hear?

Watch for startling or stilling to a sudden loud sound and settling to your voice. If your baby never seems to react to sound, ask your doctor about a hearing check — early hearing support strongly protects later communication.
