Communication milestones for your 3-to-6-month-old

By 3–6 months most babies coo, gurgle and laugh, smile back at you, turn towards voices and sounds, and take playful back-and-forth turns. Milestones are guides, not deadlines — but if your baby doesn't smile, make sounds or react to sound by 6 months, ask for a developmental and hearing check.

3-6 month communication milestones — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Between three and six months, your baby is learning that voices are the most fascinating thing in the room — and starting to join the conversation in their own way.

In short

From 3 to 6 months, most babies coo, gurgle and make playful sounds, smile and laugh in response to you, turn towards voices and sounds, and begin simple back-and-forth "chats" of babbles and expressions. These are the warm, early roots of communication — and there's a wide, healthy range of normal at this age.

What you may notice

Listening & understanding
  • Turns head or eyes towards your voice and to sounds
  • Quietens or brightens when spoken to gently
  • Startles less, but still notices sudden loud sounds

Making sounds & connecting

  • Coos and gurgles, then strings vowel sounds ("aah", "ooh")
  • Laughs out loud and squeals with delight by around 4–6 months
  • Smiles back at you and holds warm eye contact
  • Takes "turns" — you talk, baby answers with a sound, you reply

Remember, milestones are guides, not deadlines. Babies arrive on their own timeline.

A gentle watch-point

If by 6 months your baby doesn't smile or respond warmly to you, doesn't make any sounds, or never seems to react to sounds at all, mention it at your next visit and ask for a hearing check — hearing is the foundation of early communication.

What to watch

By 6 months, flag it if your baby doesn't smile or engage warmly, makes no sounds at all, or doesn't react to sounds — and ask for a hearing check, as hearing underpins early communication.

Try this at home

Talk, sing and pause — when your baby coos, wait and answer back as if chatting. These tiny turns teach the rhythm of conversation.

Frequently asked

Is it normal that my 4-month-old isn't babbling consonants yet?

Yes — at 3 to 6 months most babies are cooing and stringing vowel sounds like "aah" and "ooh". True consonant babble ("ba-ba", "da-da") usually appears a little later, around 6 to 9 months. Keep talking and responding to encourage it.

Should my baby respond to their name by 6 months?

Not reliably yet. At this age babies turn towards voices and interesting sounds, but consistent response to their own name typically develops closer to 7–12 months. Turning towards your voice and quietening when you speak are the signs to look for now.

What if my baby doesn't laugh or smile back?

Smiling and laughing in response to you are important early communication signs. If by 6 months your baby rarely smiles back or seems hard to engage, mention it at your next visit and ask for a developmental and hearing check — early support is gentle and effective.
