Activities that support your 6-to-9-month-old's development

At six to nine months, your baby is becoming an explorer — and your living-room floor is the richest classroom there is.

In short

The best activities for a 6-to-9-month-old are the simple, playful, everyday ones: lots of supervised floor and tummy time, face-to-face talking, singing and babbling back, reaching, grasping and passing toys between hands, and gentle games like peek-a-boo. At this stage your baby is sitting more steadily, mouthing and banging objects to learn cause-and-effect, and beginning to recognise familiar faces and their own name. You don't need special equipment — your warm, responsive attention is the most powerful developmental tool there is.

Activities that support development

• Tummy and floor time — short, frequent spells on a firm surface build neck, shoulder and core strength for sitting and crawling. Place a favourite toy just out of reach to encourage reaching and pivoting.
• Talk, sing and name everything — narrate your day, repeat the sounds your baby makes, and pause to let them "reply". This back-and-forth babble is the foundation of language.
• Reach, grasp and transfer — offer safe objects of different textures and shapes so your baby practises grabbing, passing a toy from hand to hand, and banging two things together.
• Peek-a-boo and hiding games — partly hide a toy under a cloth; discovering it is still there builds early memory and object permanence.
• Read together — chunky board books with big, bright pictures invite pointing, turning pages and shared attention, even for a minute or two.
• Cause-and-effect play — toys that rattle, squeak or pop up teach your baby that their actions make things happen.
• Mirror time and responsive cuddles — gazing at faces, copying expressions and lots of held, comforting contact support emotional and social growth.

Keep play short, follow your baby's lead, and watch for tired or fussy cues — small, frequent moments matter more than long sessions.

When to seek a check

Every baby develops at their own pace, but it is worth a friendly developmental check if by around 9 months your baby is not sitting with support, not making babbling sounds or eye contact, not reaching for or holding objects, seems very floppy or very stiff, or has lost a skill they once had. Raising it early is always sensible — it is reassurance, not alarm.
