Supporting Motor Development in Your 6-to-9-Month-Old

Support a 6-to-9-month-old's motor development with frequent supervised tummy and floor time, open space to roll and reach, toys placed just out of reach, supported sitting practice, and hand play with varied toys — while limiting time in walkers and bouncers. Follow your baby's pace and seek a check if they aren't sitting with support by around 9 months. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Helping Your 6-to-9-Month-Old Move and Grow — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Those happy kicks, rolls and reaches on the play mat are your baby's whole body learning to move with purpose — and your floor time is the best classroom there is.

In short

Between 6 and 9 months your baby is busy building the big movements — sitting, rolling, reaching and getting ready to crawl — alongside finer skills like passing a toy from hand to hand. You support all of this beautifully with plenty of supervised floor and tummy time, safe space to move, and interesting things just out of reach to invite stretching and shifting. The single most powerful thing you can offer is unhurried play on the floor with you nearby. Every baby finds their own pace, so think gentle invitation, not pressure.

Simple ways to help

  • Daily tummy time — short, frequent sessions across the day strengthen the neck, shoulders, back and core that sitting and crawling depend on. Get down to your baby's level and play face to face.
  • Floor play, not equipment — open floor space lets your baby roll, pivot, reach and push up. Try to limit long stretches in walkers, jumpers and bouncers, which give less chance to practise these whole-body skills.
  • Toys just out of reach — place a favourite toy slightly to the side or in front to encourage reaching, twisting and the first attempts to scoot or shuffle forward.
  • Practise sitting — support your baby in sitting and let them learn to balance, prop on their hands, and recover from a wobble. Surround them with cushions while they build steadiness.
  • Hand and finger play — offer toys of different shapes to hold, bang, pass between hands and explore. Around this age, soft finger-foods (with supervision) also build a lovely pincer grasp.
  • Move together and narrate — gentle bouncing, songs with actions, and lots of "reach for it!" encouragement make movement joyful and connected.

Most importantly, follow your baby's cues — stop when they're tired and celebrate every small new effort.

A gentle note on pace

Babies reach motor milestones across a wide, normal range. Have a relaxed chat with your paediatrician at routine visits, and seek a check sooner if by around 9 months your baby is not sitting with support, seems very stiff or very floppy, isn't bearing some weight on their legs when held, strongly favours one side of the body, or has lost a skill they once had. These are simply prompts to look closer, not causes for alarm.

The Pinnacle way

If you'd like reassurance or a closer look, a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app or online form. Our paediatric occupational therapy and motor support helps babies build strength and movement through play, and you can read how our clinician-administered developmental profile works. What to watch

By around 9 months, watch for not sitting with support, very stiff or very floppy muscles, not bearing weight on the legs when held, strongly favouring one side of the body, or losing a skill once gained — gentle prompts to seek a check, not causes for alarm.

Try this at home

Place a favourite toy just out of reach during floor play and cheer every stretch, twist or scoot — these small reaches build the strength behind crawling.

Frequently asked

How much tummy time does a 6-to-9-month-old need?

Aim for several short, frequent sessions spread across the day rather than one long stretch. Get down to your baby's level to keep it playful and connected, and stop whenever your baby is tired or fussy.

Are baby walkers good for motor development?

It's best to limit time in walkers, jumpers and bouncers. They give babies less chance to practise the rolling, reaching and pushing-up that build the strength for sitting and crawling. Open floor space with you nearby is far more helpful.

When should I worry if my baby isn't crawling?

Crawling timing varies widely and some babies skip it altogether. Have a relaxed chat with your paediatrician at routine visits, and seek a check sooner if by around 9 months your baby isn't sitting with support, seems very stiff or floppy, or has lost a skill they once had.
