Question–Answer Drills: Easy Home Practice for Your Child

Practise question–answer drills in everyday moments — start with choice and yes/no questions, build to what/where/why, wait patiently for a reply, and celebrate every attempt. Keep it short, playful and woven into daily routines like meals, baths and walks.

Some of the best language learning happens not at a table with flashcards, but in the warm back-and-forth of everyday chatter with the person your child loves most — you.

In short

Question–answer drills simply mean giving your child gentle, playful practice at understanding a question and offering a reply. At home, you can do this in tiny daily moments — at bath time, snack time, on the walk to the shop — starting with easy yes/no and choice questions and slowly building to "what", "where" and "why". Keep it short, keep it joyful, and always celebrate the attempt as much as the answer.

Easy ways to practise at home

Start where your child already is. Begin with questions they can win at, then stretch a little:
  • Choice questions — "Do you want the red cup or the blue cup?" Hold up both. Choices are easier than open questions and give your child a model of the answer.
  • Yes/No questions — "Is this a dog?" while pointing at a cat invites a fun "No!" Mistakes-on-purpose make children laugh and respond.
  • "What" and "Where" — "What are you eating?" "Where are your shoes?" Use things in front of them so the answer is visible.
  • "Why" and "How" — for older or more verbal children — "Why is teddy crying?" These build reasoning, so allow extra thinking time.

Make it work, not a test:

  • Wait a full 5–10 seconds after asking — silence gives your child room to find the words.
  • If no answer comes, model it: "It's a ball. Ball!" then move on warmly.
  • Use real life — books, mealtimes, bath toys, getting dressed — rather than drilling at a desk.
  • Praise the try, not just the right answer. Connection keeps them coming back.

Aim for little and often — a few questions sprinkled through the day beats one long session. If your child uses gestures, signs or a few words, accept any of those as a brilliant answer.

When to ask for guidance

If your child rarely responds to their name or simple questions, isn't combining words by around two years, or seems frustrated when communicating, a friendly check with a speech therapist can help. There's no harm in asking early — it simply means more of these everyday moments turn into wins.

What to watch

Watch whether your child responds to their name and simple questions, attempts a reply (word, sign or gesture), and shows growing ease over weeks. Limited response by age two, frustration when communicating, or no progress with home practice is worth raising with a speech therapist.

Try this at home

At snack time, hold up two foods and ask "Do you want the banana or the apple?" — choice questions give your child the answer to copy and an easy win.

Frequently asked

What age can I start question–answer drills with my child?

You can start simple, playful versions very early — even before your child talks. Begin with choice questions where you hold up two objects, and accept pointing, gestures or sounds as answers. As words emerge, gently move to what, where and later why questions.

How long should each practice session be?

Short and frequent works best. A few questions sprinkled through everyday moments — meals, bath, getting dressed — beats one long sit-down session. Even one minute several times a day adds up and keeps it joyful rather than a chore.

What if my child doesn't answer?

Wait a full five to ten seconds first — children often need time to find words. If no answer comes, simply model it for them ("It's a ball — ball!") and move on warmly. Never pressure; praise the attempt to keep them engaged.

Should I correct wrong answers?

Avoid blunt corrections. Instead, gently model the right answer back — if they say "cat" for a dog, smile and say "It's a dog — woof!". This keeps the moment positive and shows the correct word without making your child feel they failed.
