Working on questions with your child at home

Build your child's questioning skills at home through everyday play and routines — start with simple choices and 'what'/'where' before 'why', pause after asking, follow their lead, and treat any answer as a win. Little and often works best, and a clinical assessment is only ever done at a Pinnacle centre.

Working on questions with your child at home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Some of the most powerful learning at home happens in the small, everyday back-and-forth between you and your child — and questions are the doorway in.

In short

You can build your child's language and thinking at home by weaving questions into everyday play and routines — starting simple and getting richer as they grow. Pair a question with a pause, follow their lead, and treat any answer (even a gesture or sound) as a win. Little and often beats long sessions, and you do not need special equipment.

Easy ways to practise questions at home

Start where your child is
  • For little ones, begin with choices: "Apple or banana?" — easier than open questions.
  • Use "what" and "where" before "why" and "how" — these come earlier in development.
  • Ask, then wait a slow count of five. Children often need time to find their answer.

Make it playful and real

  • During play: "What is the teddy doing?" "Where shall the car go?"
  • During chores: "Which cup do we need?" "What comes next — socks or shoes?"
  • Read together and pause: "What do you think happens now?"

Keep the back-and-forth going

  • Accept gestures, single words or sounds as valid answers, then gently expand: child says "dog" — you say "yes, a big brown dog!"
  • Take turns asking — let your child question you too. This builds curiosity.
  • Follow their interest; a child engaged in trains will answer more about trains.

When to check in

If your child rarely responds to simple questions, isn't using words other children their age use, or seems to find understanding hard across home and other settings, it's worth a friendly developmental check rather than waiting. Early support — often through speech therapy — makes a real difference and is never a label, just a helping hand.

What to watch

If your child rarely responds to simple questions, uses fewer words than peers, or finds understanding hard across home and other places, book a friendly developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Ask one simple question, then wait a slow count of five before helping — that pause gives your child the space to find their answer.

Frequently asked

What age can I start asking my child questions?

You can start from babyhood with simple sing-song questions and choices. Real back-and-forth answers grow over the toddler years, so begin with 'what' and 'where' and add 'why' and 'how' later.

My child doesn't answer my questions — what should I do?

Pause longer after asking, offer a choice instead of an open question, and accept any response — a point, sound or single word counts. If it continues across home and other settings, a developmental check is worth booking.

How long should we practise each day?

Little and often is best. A few questions woven into play, meals and bedtime stories work far better than one long sit-down session.
