Name-Calling Activities to Try With Your Child at Home

Name-calling activities are warm turn-taking games — calling your child's name and waiting for a response, naming family in photos, rolling a toy back and forth while saying names. They build response to name, joint attention and conversational back-and-forth, and fit easily into everyday home play.

Calling a name back and forth is one of the oldest, warmest games there is — and it quietly builds some of the biggest communication skills your child will ever use.

In short

Name-calling activities are simple turn-taking games where you and your child take turns saying names — your child's name, your name, the names of family, toys or pictures. They build joint attention, response to name, listening, and the back-and-forth rhythm of conversation. You can weave them into everyday play at home with no special equipment, just a few minutes at a time.

How to try it at home

Start with response to name
  • Say your child's name warmly, wait, and reward any look or turn with a big smile, a tickle or a favourite toy.
  • Call from different spots in the room so they learn to locate your voice.
  • Keep it joyful — never repeat the name many times in a row; say it once, pause, then celebrate the response.

Build naming and turn-taking

  • Point to family photos and name each person — "That's Amma! That's you!" — and pause for your child to fill in.
  • Use a soft ball or toy: say a name as you roll it, then wait for them to say a name as they roll it back.
  • Name favourite toys, animals or foods during play; let your child correct you if you say the "wrong" name on purpose — silly mistakes spark language.

Make it everyday

  • Greet people by name at the door, on calls and at mealtimes.
  • Sing name songs and rhymes that swap in your child's name.
  • Follow their interest — if they love cars, name the cars; motivation drives communication.

When to check in

If your child rarely turns to their name by around 12 months, isn't using single words by 16 months, or has lost words or social warmth they once had, share this with a clinician promptly. A quick hearing check is always wise too. These games support development — they aren't a substitute for assessment when you have a real concern.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from a home activity or an online score. Frequently asked

What are name-calling activities?

They are simple turn-taking games where you and your child take turns saying names — your child's name, your name, names of family, toys or pictures — to build response to name, listening and conversational back-and-forth.

How often should we play these games?

A few short, joyful minutes several times a day works better than one long session. Weave them into greetings, mealtimes and play so they feel natural rather than like a lesson.

My child doesn't turn when I call their name — should I worry?

Occasional non-response is normal, especially when a child is absorbed. But if your child rarely turns to their name by around 12 months, share this with a clinician and arrange a hearing check; it is worth a closer look rather than waiting.
