Head Control

How to Build Head Control with Your Baby at Home

Head control grows through everyday play — supervised tummy time, face-to-face "chest-to-chest" cuddles, supported upright holds and side-to-side tracking, in short frequent sessions. Most babies hold their head steady by about 4 months; a friendly check helps if progress seems delayed.

Build Your Baby's Head Control at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Those first wobbly seconds when your baby lifts their head are the foundation for sitting, reaching, crawling and so much more — and you can gently support them right at home.

In short

Head control develops naturally through everyday play, especially safe, supervised tummy time and lots of face-to-face interaction. Start with short, frequent sessions from the newborn weeks, follow your baby's cues, and build up as they grow stronger. By around 4 months most babies hold their head steady when upright — if yours seems behind, a friendly developmental check can reassure you.

Easy activities to try at home

Tummy time (the big one)
  • Place your baby on their tummy on a firm, flat surface while they are awake and you are watching.
  • Start with 1–2 minutes a few times a day from the early weeks, building up gradually as they enjoy it more.
  • Get down to their level — your face is their favourite reason to lift up and look.
  • A rolled towel under the chest can help a younger baby prop on their forearms.

Face-to-face and "chest-to-chest"

  • Lie back slightly and rest your baby on your chest so they practise lifting and turning their head towards your voice.
  • Talk, sing and smile — sound and your face encourage them to turn and hold.

Supported sitting and carrying

  • When you lift or carry your baby, support the head and neck early on, then offer a little less support as they grow steadier.
  • Hold them upright against your shoulder so they practise steadying their own head.

Tracking play

  • Move a colourful toy or your face slowly side to side so they turn their head to follow.

When to check in

Most babies hold their head steady when held upright by about 4 months and lift well during tummy time before then. Speak to your doctor or a physiotherapy team if, around 4 months, your baby still cannot hold their head up, the head always tilts to one side, the neck feels very stiff or very floppy, or progress seems to have stalled. These checks are reassuring, not alarming — early support works beautifully.

What to watch

Around 4 months: still can't hold the head steady upright, head always tilts to one side, the neck feels very stiff or very floppy, or earlier progress has stalled — worth a developmental check.

Try this at home

Make tummy time a face-to-face game: lie down at your baby's eye level and chat — your face is the best reason for them to lift and hold their head.

Frequently asked

When does a baby get full head control?

Most babies lift their head well during tummy time in the first few months and can hold it steady when held upright by around 4 months. Every baby grows at their own pace, so use this as a guide rather than a deadline.

How much tummy time should my baby have?

Begin with short, supervised sessions of 1–2 minutes a few times a day in the newborn weeks, always while your baby is awake and you are watching. Build up gradually as they grow stronger and start to enjoy it.

Is it normal for my baby's head to wobble?

Yes — newborn heads are naturally wobbly because the neck muscles are still developing. The wobble steadily reduces over the first months. If the head still flops badly around 4 months, have a friendly check with your doctor.
